APRIL 9. 11)02.
Dispatches sent out from Charles- j
ton a few days aj;o announce that I
it local athletic club is making efforts
to pull off a prize fight at the
exposition grounds in that city between
Jeffries uiid Filzsimmons,
professional pugilists. Indeed, it
is stated that the promoters have I
gone so far as to offer the prospective
principals a purse of $20,000,
and that Fitzsimmons lias signified
his willingness to accept the offer.
All this in the face of the statutory
provisions prohibiting prize fighting
in South Carolina. It may be i
that the whole thing is simply a
ruse to advertise the exposition, 1
and that it is not meant to be ,
taken for its face value, in which
event perhaps no hurm will follow,
though it ia a lamentably disparaging
way to inv itejiittention loan
enterprise wkicb abw'nds with le- '
gitimate ami meretricious attrac- |
tions. Hut assuming that the ef- I
f >rts which are making to bring
this brace of bruisers together in
South Carolina are bona tide, then
a quietus should be put on the
undertaking at once. We prefer
to believe that Governor MoSweeney
will not allow the name
of our State to be disgraced by
permitting a prize tigln in it. If
he does, we shall be greatly dis ippointed
in him.
Since the foregoing article was
written and put in typo Governor
McSweeney hnH stated positively
that Jeffries and Fitzsimmoiis will
not he permitted to liglu in South
Carolina.
The Jenkins Sword.
In recognition of his services
with the Hough liiders during the
Spanish-American war, a sword
will be presented to Major Micah
Jenkins by President Roosevelt in
the city of Charleston some time
during today. The sword is given i
as Hit expression of feslin^ from \
the people of South (Carolina, who
?1 ici not like the way in which the
president was treated and who I
wish to show by a^nin inviting
hint that they r.^ret the occur- j
renee. It iH also felt that Major
Jenkins iH entitled to the sword.
The blade of the sword in of
French manufacture, the hilt Hiir- j
mounted by an aqua-marine stone
Set in diamonds, and its value' is
said to be nearly a thousand dollarrs.
On the scabbard is shown
the palmetto of South Carolina.
On the blade is this inscription:
"Major Micah J. Jenkins, llou^li '
Riders. A testimonial of his
efficiency and soldiership and of
his gallantry in action while serv..,:?i.

Suit Against Rock Kill Journal.
As attorney for Miss Hepzibnh
Uye, ol itocR Hill, W. \> . Lewis, I
Esq., on Monday, filed it complaint
against tin* Jotirnnl Publishing Co.,
of Rock Hill, claiming $3,000 dam- !
ages on account of alleged lihd
published in that paper in its ishuh
of October 15, 1901. The
grievance of the plaintiff grows
out of a story published by the
defendant, relating to the alleged
engagement of the plaintiff to a
Elorida sea captian. as the result
SjHof a newspaper advertisement, etc.
The plaintiff holds that the pub- '
lication was "wilfully and maliciously
false and defamatory," and
calculated to bring her into coutempt,
