connection with tlio Manhattan Bank
and other big robberies.
Chicago.?With the announcement of
the death of Adam Worth, alias Henry
J. Raymond, ntul known as the "Napoleon
of Crime," in London, all the
details of the recovery of the celebrated
Gainsborough painting were
made public in Chicago.
When the famous picture was restored
to its owner in Chicago last
April there were many surmises as to
the medium of its return. William A.
Pinkertou, who made the formal announcement
the recovery of the
painting, refused to contirin or deny
any of tho stories. Now that Worth is
dead, Mr. Piukerton can sneak. Worth
gave a written permission to reveal the
Gainsborough secret after lie had died.
Wrapped in oilcloth, the canvas was
handed over to C. Mnrelar.d A gnaw one
morning last April in Chicago by
Worth, who twenty-five years before
had cut the painting from i.s frame in
the Agncw galleries in London.
It was while in London that Worth
conceived the idea of carrying off the
Gainsborough picture. His first plan
was to rob the Royal Academy of its
art treasures. Then lie changed his
mind and directed his attention to the
Gainsborough painting. Assisted by

from iis canvas and carried it away.
Worth owned a steam yacht, and the
canvas was taken aboard and concealed
there tint 11 he sold the vessel to
Lord Lonsdale. Then lie took the picture
to Paris, and finally brought it to
America, where it was concealed for
fifteen years. . j
Adam Worth was horn in New York
City about sixty years ago. of Herman
parentage, and was educated in tin* ]
public schools. Ilis parents wished to
apprentice him to a trade, but before ,
lie was twenty years old he became an I
export pickpocket.
Later Worth became tlie associate of
bank thieves. He was once the leader
in the robbing of the Ocean Bank, in
Wall street. New York City, In broad
daylight of SiriO.OOO in securities?tha
biggest hank robbery on record then. I
In London he met some of the most 1
noted crooks of the day and became \
their lender. lie directed a series of re- j

Worth lived in magnificent style, and
owned a steam yacht. After serving a
short term in prison in Constantinople
he got away. lie returned to London
and lived respectably for the sake of
his wife and children.
