The evidence in the case was such as to capse the jury to render a verdict of guilty, and White was accordingly fined $20 or thirty days en the county gang, lie paid up. The Catawba Power (').s' plant was the scene of another shooting scrape on list Sunday evening, di'ju Foote and Sam Lawrence, two colored men, engaged in a difficulty in which Foote shot Ijuwrenee through the stomach with a revolver. Laurence is in a critical condition ami il not thought tluil lu* will recover. Foote left immediately after the shooting and has not been captured. Mr. Howard A. banks of the Charlotte Observer spent Sunday in town with r-dalives. He is now the junior editor of the paper and does a large part of the editorial work. Mr. Banks and three ? r four other bright young men have very materially assisted in making The Observer one of the foremost papers in the Caroliuas and we hope the paper's management appreciates their work as much as the public does. The Times has been reliably informed that within a few weeks a roller mill, equipped with the latest improved machinery, will be opened at the Jones mill site on Catawba river near Spratt's Inland. The promoters of the enterprise are Messrs. W. I. and l'.dgar Jones and the Misses liar ris, or rort Mill township. An up-to-date roller mill is a tiling which Fort Mill township has needed for a number of yours and now that, one is to la- built by Fort Mill people, tho farmers of the township should show an appreciative spirit by giving it their undivided support. Service on the Ardrey's rural delivery mail route will begin on February 1, so The Times man is informed by Postmaster 15. li. Massey. All tlio necessary ar rangeinents have boen perfected and the carrier, Mr. \V. J. Kimhrell, will make liis initial trip on the day stated above. The carrier will leave Fort Mill at about 10 o'clock a. in. and return at (> o'clock ]). in. There will be forty boxes on the route, which were ordered Some two weeks ago, but have not vet arrived. This, however will ' I not intorf??re with the beginning! of tli*' service, as the mail can lie delivered 1o the homes of the p; Irons on the r*.ute until the boxes arrive ami are put in place. The board *.?f trustees of the Fort Mill graded schools held their regular monthly nieetiiicr in the office of the Savours I'enk Friday afternoon., The principal i business heforo 111 o meeting wis the selection of a principal fur the school for the present year. A i number of names were presented and considered, but i; heiuyr very d'illicult to secure a competent man at this particular time of the year, the trust* oe failed to decide upon any of the teachers in question and the matter ivbIh where it lias been since before Christinas. It bad been unvested to the trustees to open up I he school w it h youn-j: lady teachers, who could be obtained here, but this did not meet the approval of the hoard in that they did not think that lady teachers could manage the larger s'edents. and this action was also dropped. Acting upon the decision of the hoard of trustees, an effort is heiny made to induce the lady teachers of the town to op ?u a private school. The trustees of the ?*raded school have granted permission to opeu the school in the academy. Anyway, it looks now as if Fort AI i 11 is to he without a public school this spring, at least, which is to l>o very much regrett?d. it heiiiu the first instance of the kind iu many years. citric Power l or (tor Cotton Mills.
