AN INCIDENT OF KU KlUX DAYS. : How a Troublesome Character in the Port Mill Neighborhood was Subdued and Cured of His Meanness?Died a 'Jaod Darkey. From fU" Ctonrlptte Observer, j It nvh8 in the days when one | Moses was leading the descendants i of I lain in South I'nrolinn what was j known as the Ku Iviijx Klan was j or^ani'/ed in that Stale. The first ! Klan in t he State was organized in | the town of Fort Mill, s> Madam ; Kunior and Hume other fellows Hay. i It was fine lnis-jonury ground for i that kir.d of mi organization, as , Ham's people were loud-mout b<'<l I in that neck of woods in those days. They were holding nightly meetings and drilling ?U different parts of the county (Vork ) and in the Fort Mill section. The lend, er, the ureal grand Cyclops of 1 Iain's people, was known among the lirethern as l>ig John Oliver Robinson. He weighed about two hundred pounds; had only one I eye, and his mouth looked like i a pumpkin that a cart wheel had 1 run through. He was slew-footed and mortal ugly all over and had no more good holiest sense than a ! dismal swamp goose. Tlio Ku Klux got tired of Col. Robinson's proceedings about the town and vicinity. They determined to, cheek liini without hurting if they could. Ji was well known that lie' was an up-to-dato cowaid, not with- i standing his speeches were sandwielicd with blood, thunder and white men's scalps t hat lie expected to have at. the next over How meet - I ing, in half-barrel lots. The Klan was about 100 strong. When tli.cy went out to do missionary work they wore crimson red gowns that reached from their necks to their shoe tops, with a white linen head dress. (Not a charming show for i - * i i ? ft v/n\ -t ) I \? #I\ m W III I 11C \>UJLIUh I Robinson's idea of glory when not making Bpoeches wiih opossum liun, ling. Ho saiil to the writer that what hecallod good livin* was 'possum and 'tutors. The Klan (JoJegated ono of t heir number who we will call Cotton, to arrange a'possum huul with Rollins hi in a large piece of woodland down a swampy ravine about half-way between the town and the Catawba river. They were to go down the stream, thiough the woods, for half-mile to a bridge. Where they would cross the. bridge llie 1 road went up a steep hill. The' Klan w s to be tint on grouud, scattered oyer the hill side. Among ofher dovires for making uneartlily Rounds in the hands of the Klan part of th^in were armed with what is called dumb bulls. The waterworks whistle is sweet music, com- ! pared with the dumb bull. About o'clock (Jotton, Robinson and i his 15-year-old son, Isaac, came I town through the woods to the bridge. Robinson hud a torch,! Cotton tho axe iiik) Isaac had a . 'possum in a sack. When they struck the bridge they were saying mean things about the Kii Klux. The Klan rose up as one man all over the hillside and pulled the strings of the dumb bulls and blew their whistles. Cotton fell flat on I the bridge, Robinson r.bsed his torch above his head and took one look at tho Ku Klux as they were swooping down oil him. He dropped the torch, yelled at his son Isaac to drop the sack and follow ; him. He jumped at least a halfcar length, comineneed to pray and made a bee line for the swamp. The prayer that he offered was heard by two men sitting on a fence a half-mile from the scene.1 Before be got well into the swamp he fell over a log, he scratched a j bole in the mud and got under the > log. Isaac took another course, full in the mmlami remained there till near daybreak, when lie crawled out to a briar thicket an I stayed in till next day. Big John Oliver crawled out s uuetiine before day and went to his cabin. For two! weeks Robinson stayed in doors with his old musket stuck through a crnok near the chimney with the dock cleared for action. At length he cnmeout, went up town and pave in his experience. }{p said there wero ujore than two thousand Ku I Jvliix and they wore twenly-tive feet hi till. Robinson never went to another nij^ht moetini; or mad-' any more speeches. That night's work stopped ni^ht meetings and no?ro speeches in that section.
