Wireless Telegraphy. Wireless telegraphy is only a few years eld, and in the natural course of evolution may develop as usefully as the telephone. As electric waves differ only in speed and amplitude from others, they obey the same laws of reflection and refraction. Therefore it should be possible to concentrate them and produce an electric beam by means of proper morrors or lenses, in the same manner as a searchlight ray is obtained. It seems possible that the ciruits in the receivers and oscillators could be so adjusted that they should only mutually respond to each other, like a pair of sympathetic tuning lorks. Theoretically all this is within the nature of things, and if achieved would go far toward removing the present impracticabilities. Mr. Marconi claims, it is said, to have solved these problems, and to have produced a synotonic receiver and transmitter that onlv resnoncl to the particular waves emitted by the one and that are intended for the other. He also, it is claimed, has produced a projecting apparatus that emits a well defined electric beam, and has replaced the vertical receiving masts by an equally efficient and more compact collecting cylinder. As yet. however, these are nothing but the merest rumors, unless a very indefinite letter from Professor Fleming may he regarded as confirmatory evidence. Possibly the first year of the new century will reveal some discovery that may he a panacea for all the "ills which Hertzian signalling is heir to," hut from the cold and calm standpoint of present fact< the way appears to be tedious. the road hard and difficult and the Roal a long way in the future.?Arthur V. Permanent organization was effected by the selection of Senator Hanna as Chairman. In assuming the gavel. Senator Hanna made an address, during the course of which he declared that the Republican Party stands by Its record on the tariff question and will not permit any changes whereby labor Is in any way affected. General Grosvenor presented the re, port of the Resolution Committee. The report, which was unanimously adopted by the convention as the platform of the party In Ohio, reaffirms the Philadelphia platform; pledges undivided support to the Republican party, the magnificent achievements of which It Is declared, have added lustre to American history. and under the administration of which the United States has become a world power. Industry has revived. It Is set forth; plenty has succeeded want, and our export trade now lends the world. The gold standard Is specifically indorsed. Further strengthening of the navy, legislation looking to the restoration of the merchant marine, the speedy const ruction of an American | slilp ennnl across the Isthmus, are il?? clared to be imperative needs. In regard to combinations of capital, tlio platform says: "We recognize the right of both labor and capital to combine, when such combinations arc wisely administered for the general pood, but combinations which 'create monopolies to control prices or limit production are an evil which must be met by effective legislation, vigorously enforced." Lynching is denounced in unmeasured terms. It is declared that the nation's pledge to Cuba is being faithfully kept, insuring freedom and independence to her people, who. it is added, are today enjoying more prosperity than ever liefore. The Cubans are congratulated upon "wise and conservative action in favor of r.table government." Porto Rieo is stilted to be flourishing beyond all former experiences; Hawaii's entrance into full territorial rela: ions with the United States Government has teen marked by the most marvelous progress kuown in the history of those islands. In the Philippines a "wicked Insurrection has been suppressed." and "civil government, contemplating the largest practicable degree of home rule, has succeeded military control. Personal freedom, with an equality of rights heretofore to them unknown, is secured to every inhabitant." All these things are declared to lie due to tlie "patriotic and brilliant Administration of President MeKinley." who in "facing unforeseen and grave responsibilities has met them prudently, bravely and successfully." Pull and cordial approval is extended to Senators Forakor and Ilaiina. . ?........ rt'Huui i? ueciarca lo Il.ive rendered "splendid and conspicuous service to our country, and we erruestly indorse him for a second term." Some people out Pontine way saw a very funny thing one evening last suminer. There had been a hard rain for two or three days and the earthworms had come up to the surface, as they always do at such times. Crawling along on the beaten path was what might have been the grandfather of all angleworms. He was old and tough and big, and. moreover, as will appear later, he was brainy? for an angleworm. It seemed when he stretched himself out to his full length as though he must be a foot long, and as big around as one's little linger. lust then the bright eyes of a monster toad caught sight of the snake-like worm, aiul their owner opened the attack with a good deal of confidence, and an air that indicated that the negotiation of big angleworms was the one thing he understood. Never was a toad more sadly disappointed. lie apparently thought lie could swallow u foot of angleworm as easily as lu> could a lly. lie began at one end of the worm, and got a pretty fair"start before the worm appreciated his position; then he begun to squirm and wiggle, and before the toad realized it the worm was again on the ground and crawling away. Hut lie didn't get far. The big toad returned with a "do or die" air. aud the performance was repeated. It was evident that the angleworm was too ldg a mouthful for the toad? that is. it was evident to < very one but the toad. Over and over he tried to swallow his victim, hut lie couldn't gulp the big worm all at ouee. and as soon as he had an inch or two of worm safely stored away he had to let go and get a fresh hold. lie couldn't do this so quickly but that the worm would squirm out. It was like the frog in the well who climbed up one foot and fell back two. The worm seemed made of Imlla rubber, and it looked much to the bystauders as though it would escape. Hots were made on the result, and the'worm was a hot favorite. But the bettors failed to appreciate the resources of a hungry toad. The struggle had been going on. ulp and tuck, for some tweu*y minutes. Both combatants wore as fresh as when they started, tlmiieh *l? ? worm showed the best staying qualities. Tlu? toad wjis getting impatient, and otioo or twice showed signs ??f losing his lieud; l?ut on the whole ho inaintaiued on apparently hopeless contest that ^ave his friends some cheer. One sweet girl even went so far as to bet chocolates to gloves that the nasty toad would devour the horrid worm. In the next round the worm was an easy winner, and the sweet izirl tried to hedge. Ilight here the toad tumbled to himself and took time to plan the strategy of his next move. If a toad ever thinks that one did. The air with wliieh he returned to the attack encouraged the chocolate girl, and she was rush enough to offer to double the hot. The toad didn't give away his plan at tirst. but tackled his stunt in J the same old fool way he had been j trying all nloue, but this time lie man- ' aged to fairly get a hold on his victim and swallow a hit of him. The worm's friend called it a foul tackle. Itiglu here the toad showed what manner of toad he was. His diiliculty all along had been that of the man who held the hear by the tall?he didn't dare to let go tit get a fresh hold, j Holding the section of the worm he ; had by his teeth, or what answers for a tondls 1 titr tvunied up Wltll liis paw and gripped j,is ov.n throat ami with it the end of tlio worm lio had begun to swallow. Holding it fast ho caught another grip with his | teeth and stowed away another half i inch or more of struggling angleworm. i The worm fought well, but it was no use. The superior brain and strategy of the toad would surely win. The' worm still wiggled bravely and scored some minor successes, but in the end the last of that worm disappeared j within the jaws of the toad, and the speetators tried to decide whether the sweet girl would have paid hud slio, lost.?Detroit Free Press.
