Mr. and.' Mrs. Eli Parks, of
Spencer, N. C., are visiting relatives
in and near Fort Mill. Mr.
Parks, who works in the Southern
shops at Spencer, says that 'there
nre at present" almut twenty-five

the shops.
Mr. Jos. Crenshaw, who for a
long tiiiU|was employed at the upper
mill at this place and who several
months ago went to the Philippines,
has written a letter to one
of his frietids here in which lie says
that he is well and getting along
nicely, but says that he would advise
his friends to keep out of the
United Stabs army.
Seriously Hurt in Runaway.
Oh Saturday afternoon Mr. W. j
R. Phillijm hire<l a horse from one
of the livery stables to go, witli his
wife,\to'Mr. Andy Kirabrell's home
just across the North Carolina line.
On reaching the store of the
Fort Mill Mfg.Company Mr. Phillips
entered the store, leaving his
wife alone in the buggy. At this
time the horse became frightened
and made a dash up the road.
Mrs. Phillips did all in her power
to check the speed of the animal
but was unable to do so, and, on
reaching a point just beyond the
old White homestead, she thought
it best to jump. In doing so her
foot slipped and she fell, the rear
wheel of the buggy passing over
body. Mrs. Philips was found in
an unconscious condition n few inoments
afterward and was cnrried to '
a neighbors ho^ae,-.where medical
aid was summoned. Upon exam- '
inatiou it was found that, besides
several bruises to the face ami body,
she was injured internally, the extent
of which could not at that j
time he ascertained. Mrs. Phillips
iias, however, been getting along
very nicely and u speedy recovery
is hoped for.

On Monday when court opened
Rufus Jackson, colored, was called :
upon to answer to the charge of
retailing "booze." Jackson was
found guilty and sentenced to a
fine of $10 or JO days on the gang.
Ho produced the ten.
Malenor Moore, a dusky maiden,
was found guilty of transporting
whiskey and was sentenced to pay
a fine of $3. She paid up.

Confederate flonument fur Yorkvlile.

has been under confederation
for several years past; but it is only
within the past few weeks that it
has begun to take definite shape.
At a meeting of the company
"held in the armory, last Monday
night, the matter was discussed in
detail, and for tho purpose of putting
the work on foot without delay,
it wflH agreed that the company
resolve itself into an organization
to be known as the "York
County Confederate Monument
association."
A resolution was adopted at the
meeting appointing Capt. W. B. I
Moore Jnnd thirty-two citizens
throughout the county to solicit (
funds for the undertaking.

There are at least two enses of
diptheria, of the bona fide kind,
in town. One is at the house of
Mollie Hymes, a colored woman
living near the narrow gunge railrailroad
on Kast. .Jefferson street.
The other is in a white family on
the Fred Adickes place on King's
Mountain road. The antitoxine
treatment, is being used and it is
not thought that there is much
danger of a soread of the disease.
The appearanc oof glanders near
Tirzali has caused considerable apprehension
among owners of stock, i
.Mr. Henry Mussey had some sick
mules, and Dr. Fri?dheiin, a veterinary
surgeon of ifock Hill was
called in and an expert from Clemson
college was also sent for. The
Olemson man pronounced the
trouble glanders. One mule had
already died, and two others with
well developed cases were killed, i
It is thought that four others have
it, or will have it. and they are being
kept apart from other stoek
and carefully watched. It is very
unfortunate at this season of the
year, when a mule is worth more
