Senator j McLaurin thinks too much of the "dear people and the Slate" to stir up a heated campaign with , the senii r senator. McLuurin has found a loophole of escape in tho fact that Governor McSweeney simply advised "ni< re time for con-1 sideration," and sn^estcd an "olf year in p ilitics." But this does not satisfy the many thousand 1 )einoci at ic voters who were anxiously awaiting the explanation ol the junior senator's act ions in the senate during the past session of that body. It was not surprising, at all, to hear that Mr. MrLauriu had with- ] drawn his resignation, for it has been exp-cted all alotio that, as soon as he realized what a foolish step he had t..ken, and that it meant certain defeat for him, lie ' would "crawfish" ou the first op port unity. Senator McLaurin is the first mid (inly man the Democracy (if this State lias ever sent to the sen- ! ate who has betrayed his trust, and his refusal to resign simply I means that South Carolina is to he | luisrcpreHeuled in the United States Senate another year, at j least, if no humor. Senator Tillman, upon receipt of the governor's refusal to accept the resignations, replies, in part, as follows: Your excellency, of course, has the right and it is entirely proper to return my resignation and advise more serious consideration.] In declining to accept, I am sure you have transcended your authority. 11 will take very little consideration and reflection to convince you of this. You cannot compel a member of the l uited States Senate to hold his commission and exercise the functions of that office if lie chooses to surrender it. My action in tendering my resignation, while hasty, was not ill advised, and I am tirmly convinced of the wisdom of my course upon r flection. It is somewhat remarkable that you should ask the senators who have resigned to take time to Kinaiuri, >v urn ,>*'*1 yiMiiwru iirr reported to be ready to appoint two senators in "two minutes and and a half" after receiving immediate resignation. Von deelare that the "people are entitled to one year of penee and freedom from political battles and bitterness" I am ready to no knowledge that this is very de- > sirable, but our race has ever thought war preferable to dish uior, and unless I am very much deceived. a large majority of the people of South Carolina would lie triad of an opportunity to punish treachery and have those principles and policies which they support loyally represented in the Congress of the I'niteil States. W hat you "consider a calamity" , would be hailed by thousands as an opportunity to get rid of a traitor who now in their opinion disgraces the commonweal!h. Holding this view I decline for the present to withdraw my resignation. It was tendered in order to secure the resignation of Senator Mcliittiriu and will not he withdrawn until lie has shown his unwillingness to let our people pass upon his conduct t his year instead of next. He declares in his latest interview tlint lie "will speak on such invilalioiis as lie did at 'iatlney when p issihle and will not eonsent to any i iiterferenee by Senator Tilhnan or anybody else." Whether or not Mr. Melnnrin will he allowed to do this remains to lie seen. If the people have a right to hear him, the same people have a right to hear me and ot ln r.-. lie no longer seems to have anxiety about his health and if allowed to speak by himself, rather enjoys I he prospect. As will be seen by the following extracts, fioin a letter to (Jovertior MeSweeney on Monday, Senator McLauriii "has shown his unwillingness to let our people pass up on his conduct this year:" 1 appreciate fully the force of the reasons given by you, and the effects upon the people of the Slate of a heated ami strife-producing contest for I'nitel St iles Senator this year. Kor the sake of the "peace, prosperity and liapp II ess of I lie p? ople of this Slide," I am willing to hold on to my commission as a lulled Stales Sena t??r, mid to continue to Hervo the State as 1 have done in the pas to the "best of my ability." Ibit in retaining my seat in the senate, I will not consent to bo "bossed by any one claiming a riltIit to judjje my motives and actions. I propose to exercise my judgment on all national questions under the inlliienee of a tie^h s? 11-?? of re sp nisil>iIiI v to tin* people, and to work for the upbuilding of the political and material interests of my Stale. I recooni'.e fully nty ace untability to the sovereign people, and am always ready to tjivea strict account of my otllcial acts to tlietn. 1 n ci use tiling to hold my commission, I wish it understood that it is in response to your patriotic appeal that it is for the good of the State and not because I feared to iro before the people and discuss with the senior senator or others the national issues of the day.
