the writer recently put to a leading
animal importer, according to tlie
"Washington Star.
"Well." wav the reply, "monkeys for
the most part die of consumption and
pneumonia. Antelopes, moose, deer
ami other browsing beasts die because
proper foods cannot be found for them.
In my opinion the tannin in the baric
and twigs which these animals feed
most largely upon is what their systems
need in order to keep them In a
lien 1 thy condition. Of course, very little
of this is found in the hay and other
foods which are fed to those animals
la captivity. In regard to the farvrtslcrn

seems to be some peculiar quality of

prairie, which is absolutely necessary
for their sustenance anil well being. I
think that the climatic change lias very
little influence upon them. 1 have
shipped lots of mule deer, black-tailed
deer, antelope and Kooky mountain

but they did not live one year. You
see thai moose, for instance, live
' largely upon lichen and hark. Of
course, these foods cannot he secured
so far from the forests, and hay proves
to he a very poor substitute. I have
no doubt but that If these animnls
could he supplied with their natural
food they would live as long as lions
and tigers.

country they are kept there until they
recover. While in transit across the

of the Ilathhun poisoning mystery.

The police have discovered
a gaping discrepancy between the
statements made by Mrs. Itathhun.

F. Hart, his fellow brakeman and a

Hoth Hart and Mrs. Knthbun were
examined for hours by the police, and
their stories were sifted closely. Hart
stoutly maintains that he told Mrs.
Ha til bun to save the dinner pail containing
the poisoned coffee on la is return

poison which both he and llnthlmn
had swallowed in their coffee. Mrs.
Knthbun declares that lie told her
nothing of the sort, that she took the
dinner pail, and after throwing the
coffee away washed the pail. The
difference in the stories told by Hart
and Mrs. Knthbun led the police to decade
to hold Hart, lie was locked up
in the cell of the Central Precinct on
an order from Coroner Eli Mix.
The police have discovered that three
of the members of Mrs. Kathbun*s
family have died from arsenical poisoning.
while another was injured permanently.
They are her mother, her
son Willie, live years old. and iter husband.
At the time her son Willie was
fatally poisoned by eating an apjde on
which had been placed poison his
edder brother, Percy, also was poisoned.
