!*> B. JORDAN, . . . . Editor 1 SUBSTRUCTION - S2.SO Per Yr. i Dillon, S. CM November 24, l"42l t It seems that in one respect the g Irish question is like liauquo's ghost. t "It will not down." i It Congress keeps on it will re- . P-. solve, itself into a "Committee of In- , Testi gabion." It might pay to have a '. ten year holiday around the capital. 11 Mr. Bryan may yet live to see the ( It , 4a> when lie can truly say. "I had1. * rather be right than president." I j L Uncle Sam's ten year holiday pro-;, V posal was a "solar plexus" to the as- j I scmbled foreign delegates to the d is- j j I imminent conference. | ^ The Governor has said "no" to any j public building program for next!t year and it probable that there will { bo many echoes of approval of this j position from the mountains to the e seaboard. c ; s It looks as if all that is binding as \ a result of the disarmament confer- E <wice will look very much like the i League of Nations. I c Today will be hailed with delight f, by many a fellow who has laid in la bit. stock of ammunition nn^t had longed for freedom of the woods. c a Tt would seem that some of the v, opposition to Mr. Ford's offer for ? Muscle Shoals is the fear that he f <??uld really give some significance y q> the first part of the name. n :? F IX ASSOCIATKl) t'HAKITIMS FOlt DILLON. V I L We raise the question of proprie-1 ty of an Associated Charities for our ^ town. Hardly a day passes but that j there are*appeals to help some one claimed to be in need or distress. A la.?ge number of people are benevoentlv inclined . mil w*;iiin<? ?, - - "4* I" "^*1' i .\ any worthy benevolent object, but \ tliey have no opportunity ot' knowing if the circumstances or the worthiness if the appeal. Sometimes these are H presented by irresponsible parties anil the benevolently inclined make a ^ contribution on the ground that they rather assist some who are unworthy ^ than to mis3 one worthy case. It appears to us that the town is of suf- y ficient size now and the charity problem is sufficiently complex to warrant the organization of an Associated Charities to take over such j.work in our community. We are aot pressing the matter but feel constrained to raise the question of the propriety of the consideration of such w a move and call upon the citizens of Sl the town to think it over and see if j '-v some practical plan cannot be devis- 151 e<l to handle what is becoming more' f a difficult and complex problem in ,^ our midst. S(. THE CHIME WAVE. to It is probably true that the crime on wave which has been sweeoinir over ni; cur country during the past few bu years is gradually receding, yet it is _ still present in sufficent volume to ; cause alarm. There is still a multiplicity of killing and taking human life and the citizenship of the land is being driven to the point where a jj.' more positive stand must be taken ^() in behalf of the preservation of hu-j(j, man life. In this particular type of j? . crime Dillon county has a good rec- eo ord of late. It has been some time th aince there was a case in the county G. ocurt for murder and this fact has eel been commented upon by presiding ^ judges. It is to be hoped that we G. V can keep up this record. And in this 1,1 ccnnection it may be added that this t county has been conspicuous by the absence of cases of self destruction which has been become prevalent in the country at large. While we are aware of the fact that conditions can n< change at any time, and we are not ni giving ourselves to undue exultation, c still it is noteworthy that we have in "6en remarkably free from the above ui and it ought to be the aspiration of H the citizenship of our county that we hl ahalj become even freer of every sort a of crime than we are. r* G THANKSGIVING. 1 ft. is interesting to study the different attitudes assumed toward thanksgiving and what is known as Thanksgiving Day. To some it is sim- t ply a day of cessation from labor (l while to others it is an opportunity c roi irivoiny. mere are* ino.se wno * will have the joy of happy family F gatherings while others will he bar- 1 red such pleasure. Some will see in * it an occasion for revelling in their blessings while others will be led to "rte profoundly grateful for any blessitr* which have come upon them and in case they have been deprived of. these they will still be of thankful heart to Him who never makes a mistake. A very fine thanksgiving spirit is displayed in the following: "This is Thanksgiving day. Its observance ought to be in the best sense religious. And it might be well to this ^ end to review the feelings and emotions with which we approach It , Much of our thankfulness may be ] L IL.;.:. , .L* t 1 fl HE DILLON E h pvrely selfish. The Vnily circle has -emained unbroken.^o wasting slcktess has come intoj the home. Prosperity has left its blessings. The ,able is laden with plenty. There is neat in the larder and grain in the storehouse. Becausf of these things hey imagine they are grateful; but mch gratitude is of the essence of selfishness. It is dependent upon exerior conditions. ] It finds its basis n circumstances, it draws its iuspirition from clear /skies and smooth .ailing, hence it id fitful and evanescent as tlio alternations of sunlight md shadow. If tjiese conditions of ursonai comfort and prosperity are n themselves the, ground of thanksfulness, where in the hour of adversity shall we find occasion for rejoicing? The recdrd of the past has ts graver side. Tjiere have been pain md losses and disappoinmtents and K-reavements and heartaches. Where n these things ip there reason and ;round for gratitude? Has the empty arder, the bare table, the desolate tome, the vacanft chair, the fresh nound in the cemetery, no place for hanksglvlng? A,h, just here is the joint of stumbling with many an earnest soul, we find in the bitter hill of adversity the true test of our :ratitude. And that is true gratitude vhich, triumphing over conditions uerely physical and external, finds ts ground of thankfulness in God limself. It is independent of cirumstances. It goes beneath the surace of life, whether sad or joyous, nd found itself upon God." This is relj out and we commend it to thp cnslderation of our people as our ttention is once more in a special ay directed to thanksgiving. For the fruit of the time of our toil or what'er Wo have fought for; Whether horn of the brain or the soil e the meed wo have sought for; or the gifts we have had from His hand i'Iio is Lord 'of tlie living, et there vun( through the length of the land Thanksgiving!
