The statement In the nature of a report to the governor, not only shows, | that the state highway department ? A did all it could to get the Pee Dot v bridge located where the Pee Dec ?r vDee bridge commission wanted it, but that certain statemens were made regarding the highway department's nlniU- wtllolx ll-oiu i in. n/xrvonf Ao rt f?-U ' - ?V?. ??V?V ??"l vv?? vv?. *%.o M result of the controversy between the state highway commission and the Pee Dee bridge commission the Pee Dee commission last week rejected the possibility of state and federal aid foi . ... the bridge and a toll bridge is to be 4 Xprected by private capital instead. ) The state highway commission report to Governor Cooper'shows thai plans for a bridge were drawn and approved by government engineers, tc be located at a point two and a hall miles above the Mars Bluff ferry, ' This plan was approved by the Pee Dee bridge commission, and a contract was let for the construction. The work had started, when charges were made that the estimates were hundreds of thousands of dollars out o! line and that a high water bridge could be erected at Mars Bluff ferry for hundreds of thousands of dollars less than the Pee Dee span wae to cost. Bridge engineers from Georgia ard North Carolina were called in ' in examine ine jod, xne report shows, and an engineer came from Washington for the same purpose. The reports of all three confirmed the position of the state highway department. Later a thorough investigation was made by an engineer from the bureau of roads at Washington, and he found that a "xf)$Mdge could he built as planned by th^ highway engineers for less thar $4f>0,000, while a bridge at Mar; BluUf ferry the last point selected by the' Pee Dee commission, could b< bidilt, up to the same specifications for $-141,327. The Unitee States department estimated that the low wat er bridge could be built at Mars Blufl ferry, for between $165,000 and $175,000. The highway commission tells Gov. Cooper that it "used every effort to secure the consent of the government to participate in a bridge nearer tlu ferry, but these efforts were imsnr cessful." "The department desires you to know that the charges which were made to the effect that its estimate! were hundreds of thousands of dollars out of the way. and that the cost of a high water bridpe at the point selected by its engineers would , K Fains K I": Were ?
