The peoplA of Dillon were shocked and grieved to learn Saturday morn- I ing that Dr. J. H. Dew, the well- i known evangelist, had taken his ownjt life by cutting hig throat with a razor. Dr. Dew was in a hospital suffering'c from a nervous breakdown and it isj believed he cut his throat in a moment of temporary insanity. He lived at's Asheville where he went several years i ago to regain his health which had i become impaired from the strenuous 1 work he had been doing in the pulpit, h Dr. Dew was a native of Dillon < ccunty, having been born in the i southwestern part of the county 58 j years ago. After leaving college he' taught school and then entered the' ministry. He became one of the na-j tion's leading evangelists and his J work extended all over the United States. For many years he lived in the west, but his work took him to all parts of the country. Three years ago Dr. Dew conducted a meeting at Dillon and his strong and forecful sermons are still fresh in the minds of hundreds who heard him at these meetings. It can truly be said that Dr. Dew sacrificed himself to the cause to which his life had been given. He was an incessant worker and as he closed a meeting at one place he took up another at some other place probably hundreds of miles distant. The, physical strain was too great and | the breakdown that followed left him almost a physical wreck. The interment was made at Latta Saturday morning. o Special Meeting of Dillon Post No. :12, The American Legion. A special meeting of this post will j be held Friday.
