EARTH TO RACE WITH COMET
So Says Observatory of V. S. of California.
Expect Meteoric Shower
Jun0 27.
Beekly, Cal. April 28?For a month
this summer the earth will engage in
a race with the pediolic comet PonsWincake
and because it will have no
chance to win, it will endeavor
through astral influence to trip up
its gaseous rival according to a report
made public today by the observatory
of the University of California. The
oarth will not get into the race until
the comet has a lead of between
twelve and twenty million miles, but

The "tripping up" process of perturbation
caused by the earth influence
will pull the comtoft away from
Its course somewhat but it will continue
to plunge along the cosmic
speedway at an undiminishable pace.
It will oap its supremacy finally
when, on June 27. it flips its tall so
hard against its terrestrial rival that
the impact wll 1 send out sparks.
Thesto will go down in the record as
a meteoric shower.
The comet, at last calculation, was
approximately 37,000,000 miles from
the earth. Its nearest approacn a ill
be 132 of an astronomical unit, or
twelve million miles, on Jun0 7, and
shortly thereafter the race will begin.
At the greatest brilliancy observable
from the earth the comet will be
of the eighth or ninth magnitude.
Nothing greater than the sixth magnitude
can be observed by the naked
eye. so the world at large will see
nothing of the visitor until the tail-1
flipping episode, on June 27. However,
the earth's attraction for the
comet may be so great that new cal-1
culations may be necessary when the
race gets under way.
Any potential prophecies that the
comet will do great damage to the
earth are out of order, the observatory
states. On the other hand, the
metoric shower, if it develop as anticipated,
will prove to be a harmless,
If inspiring, spectacle.

SLEEP.
Youth's Companion.
Nothing is more important to the
health of man than Bleep. Scientific
experiment has proved that it is more
essential to life than food. With
proper precautions a starving annual
will recover complete health, but the
same animal if deprived of sleep will
die? and in much less time than it
would take to starve him. The Chinese
long ago knew that truth; one
of their favorite forms of torure was

he either went mad or died.
Many people are mistaken in thinking
that they suffer from complete
insomnia; for "complete insomnia,"
extending over any long period, can
be maintained only by alert and active
watchers. Nevertheless, many
people do suffer from gravely Insufficient
sleep. On th? other hand,
many people sleep too much, either
because they think they need a great
deal of sleep or because they have inactive
brains, or undeveloped consciousness.
Young and healthy children,
savagfes and all adults of low
intelligence are likely to fall asleep
the minute they become quiescent, j
So, too, persons who hav0 anaemia or
any other disorder that checks the!
flow of blood to the brain sleep too
n uch and too easily.
Should we keep the brain quiet as
the normal hour of sleep approaches?
That which healthy children do automatically
adults should do as the
result of observation and reason. Persons
who doubt their power to sleep
through the night should scrupulously
refrain from heated arguments,
prolonged talk of any kind, exciting
plays, indigestible suppers and tea
and coffee, especially coffee. Many
people who are susceptible to the
| stimulus of coffee learn that, if they
would fall asleep, they must forego

it in his hands and bending it.
