Jboeording to Government returns
' Cor UM. It is stated in a recent
Wta&enient prepared by the United
*8Sates Bureau of Education, the peoplc
of the United States spent for
Binaries last year $22."700,000,000.
Of yste huge sum, more than double
4He vast debt owed us by foreign
countries, $750,000,000 was for face
power, cosmetics, perfumes, etc.;
9300.000,000 was for furs; $350,OCO.OOO
for soft drinks; $400,000,OOO
for toilet soaps; $800,000,000
for cigarettes; $510,000,000 for cigars;
$800,000,000 for tobacco and
snuff;; $500,000,000 for Jewelry;
9?,000,000,000 for luxurious service;
$50,000,000 for chewing gum;
9250,000.000 for ice cream; $3,000,000,000
for joy rides, pleasure resorts
and races.
The point made by the Bureau of
Education is that the American people
in 1920 spent for things which at
least they could have done without
36.000.000.000 more than we have
cpent for education in the three hundred
years of Amenca's history. It
as estimated that the grand total of
expenditures on educational institutions
of all kinds from the discovery
of America to the present time has
been approximately $16,645,000,000.
In 1918, the last year for which complete
returns have been compiled,
there was spent in the United States
for public education, elementary and
secondary, $762,250,164; for normal
schools for the training of teachers.
920.414,689; for higher education in
OOlleees. universities and nrofessionnl
and tfrchnical schools, whether supported
by public taxation or privately
endowed. $137,055,415?a grand total
of $919,729,258- That was less
than a third what the public spent
for joy rides, pleasure resorts and
races. It was only $250,000,000 more
fflian was spent for face powder,
cosmetics and perfumes.
The Dillon Herald recently printed
figures going to show that in the
town of Dillon something like $100,GOP
a year is spent for snuff. Dillon
is a progressive town and the county
seat of a progressive county, yet the
report of the State Superintendent
of Education shows that in the entire
county of Dillon in 1920 the
tclal paid in salaries to both white
and negro teachers was $78,841.93.
match statistics could probably be
given, if not for snuff then for many
articles for every county in
'South Carolina. Yet it is true, as the
Itaieau of Education remarks that
think we believe in education."
