SlUSCSUFTION - 92.50 Per Y..
1 Villon, B. C., January 20, 1021
Harding's projected cabinet is get-1
ting more attention than the League
of Nations.
The railroads of the country have
i laid off 10CL000 men. Before they
got the last raise they told the gov-j
eminent , that they needed the men
,1 ? ?
toon wages was one reason wnv
freight rates were too low.
Tt.e United States stands to lose
nothing if the chief powers agree to
disarm their navies. A naval race between
nations costs tyilliohs of dol -1
lars and provokes war, wluch costs
billions more and niany lives.
Wilson vetoed the farmers' aid
bill largely because he is no longer
running for office; and Congress repassed
it over hiB veto largely because
a majority of its members hope to i
run for office continuously.
AS TO ACREAGE REWCTION.
^f, til the beginning of the year,'
i the manufacturer bought a year's i
; supply .of raw materials and the
price declined before he could con-|
vort it into the manufactured prod-|
uct and dispose of it at a profit, Inwould
be financially embarrassed.
But the manufacturer does not do
business that way. He buys in limited
quantities, and if the price declm-s
to a point below the cost of production
he operates his establishment on
half time or closes down until he is
able to dispose of his product at a
profit.
In this respect the manufacturer J
has the advantage of the producer of
aw materials.
In the spring of the year the far-(
nit-r prepares his land for a certain
number of acre.s of cotton. He pro-.
?
Y-ides for a certain number of tenants
or laborers to cultivate and
gather his crop. He buys his fcrtllu-:
cr before the seed are placed in the
ground. He has a certain number of ^
mules or horses on his place to do!
the plowing and hauling.
He has all his eggs in one basket,
The tenants and laborers must be |
taken care of for 12 months. He has'i
paid out bis hard cash for fertilizers '
and i hey must be used. Tile mules '|
and horses must be fed. He iK tied r
hand and foot for the next 12
months. j [
If the priee of cotton declines lie'r
fa helpless; he must take his loss. '
Unlike tlie manufacturer, he cannot [
curtail production; he cannot - run r
or. half time with reduced expenses
until the price or his product
vances. He is at the mercy of the r
world. When harvesting time comes L
he must dispose of his cotton, even ?
\ ?f the price is greatly below tbe cost r
production. L
jt 'Is slated on good authority that [<
is enough raw cotton on hand p
to supply the world's needs for more'f;
tban 12 months. Warehouses In th?*'r
Unite,| States and England are bulg-j'ing
with manufactured goods for|Q
which there is no market. ThP pro-!p
dnction of manufactured cotton'l
goods during the month of Decern-jH
ber was only 50 per cent of normal. _
if 75 per cent of a crop is made thisjl^
year the average price will be low. , H
The situation is In the hands of the *;
farmer. It is in his power to make a f
million or a sixteen million bale r
r crop. It he plants for a six million !*
bale crop the effect on the price ol [
cotton now on hand will he Imme-jr
. diate, and there is every reason to L
believe that this year's croj> will com-if
niand a fair price. On the other hand Jr
tf be idants for a large crop there is t
bound to be a further decline in the '
?pric?? of tl?e 1020 crop and this year's;
$ "erop will sell below the cost lof pro.
> duct ion. ;
; I The farmer cannot curtail his .
' Jr.^creage after the May crop report is !
published. He has made his plans for , i
it the) year and he cannot change theni.l,
? Experts arG agreed that if the May j!
^crop report even shows a normal >|
^acreage ror i:?zt tnere will be a still j,
. urther decline In the price of the
920 crop.
The acreage reduction movement is
i^eading throughout the cotton belt.
^tTTp individual farmer is beginning
v to realize that it is the only way he
5^can save himself from disaster. The
^movement has taken a firm lipid in
WDillon county and there will be a (
i substantial reduction in this county
this year.
I It is a matter of such great importance
that it should have the individual
support of every man in the
county. Men of all classes and
professions should be urged to attend
the meetings that will be held
l throughout the county this week and
next week.

In the movement. II is merely join,
tg bands with several thousand oth?er
cotton producing counties in a determined
effort to bring the production
of cotton within the bounds of
reason, and at the same time remedy
a situation which threatens to
deal a vital blow to the future prosperity
of the south.
