FAYETTEVILLE'S DEFI. (
c
When Sherman after his march i
from Atlanta to the sea turned hisji
columns northward he was temper- 6
arily halted just below Fayetteville. t
North Carolina, while his engineers s
threw a. temporary bridge to cross a t
swollen creek, the Confederates in
falling back having destroyed the on- t
ly bridge which spanned the stream, c
The retreating Southern army had n
left behind in Fayetteville a popula- 1
tion made up almost altogether of t
women, children, boys too young to t
fight and men too old for service, t
In response to a call practically all,o
of these older men gathered at the!a
courthouse to discuss such measures;a
as might be taken for the protection: i'
of the town in view of the approach'
of the invaders and the prospect that b
? - - . . ... ?i? i
within a lew nours, at most, me piate
would be entered. Various expedients t<
for saving the town from the fate; y
which already had overtaken Atlan'.a J1
and Columbia were discussed. But i b
none of them seemed feasible, inas- j t
mnch as the community could mus-;"|
ter no adequate defending force and; ii
inasmuc' , also, as there was no great j S
likelihc od that the enemy would'turn J
aaide and pass the town by.
Finally an aged veteran of the &
Mexican War rose from his seat and b
caught the eye of the presiding offi- v
cer. t(
