The Raid Hog.
| HartsviUe Messenger.
Friends have you ever come in contact
with a road hog? The automobile
hog? He is more of a hog than
r the real article. He comes dashing
long and does not want to give anyv
body else a part of the road. If there
is mild and slush in the road he will
go whizzing by you splashing mud in
| your face and all over the side abd
on the cushions\of your nicely cleaned
vehicle. They call him a man but
he does not belong in the human
: class this inconsiderate brute. H^
will run up behind your car and blow
and blow and blow his screechy horn
to show off and then will not pass
you. He pays nothing towards Keeping
up the road and yet he wishes and
tries to monopolize it. If it was not
r' for the fear that he would gee his
worthless neck broken he would dash
Into your car and kill every member
of your family and you included and
mash op your automobile to boot.
The penitentiary is too good ji place
for the road hog. We know of no
place low enough for him. He is
worBe than the devil himself for the
old demon in all his wickedness,
onetimes shows politeness. There
is no law with apenalty severe enough
for the monster, the road rog, but
we would like to see our legislature
ad our congress pass one that would
deal with him effectively. 1

A very unusual honor came to the
Allen family of Dillon County during
the recent commencement at Furman
University. Two brothers, Mr. C. J.
Allen, and Mr. C. B Allen. both of
Latta, won medals for the best declarion.
Mr. C. J. Allen won the Whar.
medal for the best Freshman ;
declamation, and Mr. C. B. Allen won
the McMillan medal for the best jun- i
lor declamation. This experience is 11
probably unique in the history of ]
Furman University. Mr. C. B. Allen l
has been elected Editor-in-Chief of 1
the Hornet, the weekly publication of j
the students of Furman University, s
which is probably considered the most '

fine character. They are the last |
two of six brothers to be educated in
Furman University. s
Furman University has had a very i
successful year's work both in itsaca- 1
dcmic. literary, and athletic life. Its <
baseball team won the championship t
of the state this spring, and its foot- 5
ball team tied ror ne cnampionsnip ui
the state last fall. It Is rare that any
college has had such a record in athletics.
Commencement was made notable
by the formal inauguration of
the new President, Dr. W. J. McGlothlin.
He has been acting as
Fresident of the University since the
first of l&st July.

When the ''Tiger" Scored. ?Many
good stories are being printed about
Clemenceau just now in the French
newspapers. One of the best of them
refers to one of the several duels he
fought in the stormy days of the
Dreyfus case.
Clemenceau arrived at the railway
station?the duel was fixed to take
place near a village some little way
out?at the same ime as his oppon- '
cnt. n
The latter was first at the booking- J
office window, and asked for a return ?
ticket to the place agreed upon. Then t
he stepped aside and gave place to' (
the "Tigr," who quietly asked the >
clerk for a single ticket. ?
"Afraid you will not return, eh, M. ^
Clemenceau?" the other said sneerhielv.
Not at all, monsieur,*' was the
quick respone. "It is my invariable
practice to make use of my opponent's
return half?when I've finished
with him!"
