Controlling the Boll Weevil?

Calcium arsenate, the boll weevil

10,000 acres of cotton in Mississippi,
ouislana, Arkansas and Texas durig

These savings have been made at

ere, which includes cost of materials,

of machinery. At the price

rhile to poison the boll weevil.
It is advised by those who have perected
this means of holding the wee11
in check that the additional cost of
rowing cotton should not be assumed
>n very low yielding acres, therefore
otton should be grown on the better

In combatting the weevil with poion,
it is not possible to exterminate
t, but the object is to control it so

When to Begin Poisoning
Poison is not applied until about

It has been foand that if the sprayins
begins when about 10 per cent Of
the squares are punctured and" if repeated
every four days that as a rule
three sprayings are all that is necessary.
If weather interferes and the
applications are more than four days
apart, then more of them must be
made.
Amount Required Per Acre and Coat
From five to seven pounds of calcium
arsenate are required to thoroughly
dust an acre. At the present
time the cost of calcium arsenate is
25 cents per pound. With experience
in applying the poison, and a
good machine, five pounds of calcium
arsenate can be made to do the
work satisfactorily.
Applied When Dew la On
8inca the weevil is poisoned by
drinking dew which has been poisoned,
it is necessary to apply the poison
wWle the dew is on the plants.
It is customary to put it on at night,
using good lights with which to sea

from a machine that will form a dust
cloud. This dust will settle on all
parts of the plant
Three types of machines are to be
had, a hand gun that is suitable for
twenty-fire acres and under, cart
sprays and power sprays for larger
operations. Variohs types of machines
are tested by Professor Coad and associates
at Tallulah, La., and they will
give information as to which are satisfactory.
In this connection, these
government men will also analyse
samples of calcium arsenate without
charge to see if they conform to specifications.
It is essential that the materlal
conform exactly to specifications.
A few simple precautions are all
that is necessary to prevent ham to
farm animals and operators of the
machines, such as mussling the horses
and the men washing before eating
