would have made a better showing 1
in the lust census if there had been i
some way to keep those Mexicans 011 1
the other side of the border.
A man with political ambitions '
doesn't make a good cabinet mem- '
ber, and probably that is why some 1
of them discovered they couldn't live '
on $12,000 a year. 1
Some of the big Sunday editions of
the city newspapers are actually beginning
to look as if an effort were
made to save paper. Some of them
don't go much over a hundred pages.
Whenever a man dies and leaves
money his enemies explain how he ]
got it. But such evidence doesn't
amount t0 much.
The cash value of Dillon's two leading
money crops last year?cotton
and tobacco?was something over ten
million dollars, or nearly $5000 per
capita. Twenty years go the total de
posits in all the banks or ine state
did not exceed that amount.
Opposition of labor to having the
railroads back in private control suggests
that the rail workers don't
think the private companies will be
as easy to convince regarding wage
increases as has been the government.
It is evident that Bill Bryan is still
something of a figure in the Democratic
party. Bill is going to have
something to say at San Francisco
and though he is no good hand at
regular poker, he is going to have a
few cards up his sleeve when the
Frisco game starts.
It is regrettable that the House

automobile law. The law, as It 1
stands, is a pernicious pi?ce of legislation.
It deprives the owner of an 1
automobile the right to plead a single
extenuating circumstance in a
suit for damages, regardless of who *
was driving the car when the damages
were sustained. If a thief steals
an automobile and does damage with '
it by striking the property or per- 1
son of another person the owner of
the automobile must pay for the damage
so done. The automobile can be

it become a first lien regardless "r
all other claims against it. If a iea1er
sells an automobile and takes part
cash and a mortgage for the balance
!hc purchase money mortgage would
become a second lien in the event of
an attachment in a suit for damages.
Therefore under the present law a
first mortgage over au automobile is
not a desirable piece of collateral, and
many banks refuse to handle ?' But
the worst feature of the law is th
section which holds the owner of the
car liable for damages regardless of
who is driving the car when the damage
is done. If a thief breaks into n
house, steals a gun and does murder
with it the law does not hold the owner
of the gun responsible for the murder.
Or if a horse runs wild and kills
i child the parents of the child have
10 grounds for a suit for damage
igainst the owner of the horse. T*present
automobile law is a piece of
:lass legislation. It was passed when
there was considerable prejudice to
the automobile?when it was looked
upon as a pleasure vehicle. The atomobile
has become an important
factor in the business life of the
world. It has found a place and it is
tiere to stay. It is not entitled to
jpecial privileges, but it deserves the
same measure of protection as that
enjoyed by any other legitimate institution
that has its place in the
world of commerce.
IDLE LAND STILL IDLE.
Despite the universal advance in
the value of land, there are still millions
of acres of idle tend in the
country, a great part of which could
5e utilized for agricultural purposes,
rhere was talk of a year ago of inducing
returning soldiers to occupy

iiers to edge back into industrial life
without upsetting our equilibrium.
Some of the northern states are the
most flagrant examples of what not
to do about it. Minnesota, for instance,
still has over 5,000,000 acres
of idle land, though nearly 2,000,000
acres of reclaimed land are in use in
that state. Wisconsin is another state
that has more than its share of swamp
lands, there being over 2.000,000.
Nearly half a million acres have been
reclaimed. Michigan is worse off than
Wisconsin, but shows an improvement
in reclaimed land under the
plow.
It is a fact that millions of dollars
are being spent for the purchase of
improved farms. If the same sum
were put into reclaiming swamp
lands there would be opportunity for
a marvelous increase in production of
foodstuffs.
