Family Record on a Turtle.
Providence, Aug 18. ? Georg-j L.
Stlllman, of Westerly, while strolling
about a farm that he owns
came across a huge turtle. On the i
turtle's back was carved "Paulj
Uaxon, 1793."
Next was the name of Adam
Stlllman, grandfather of the present |
owner of the farm, with the date
v 1908, and under this was the name
of Mr. Stillman's father, Joseph
Stlllman, dated 1866.
That these name? and dates are
authentic is not doubted, as Mr.
Stlllman says it is a matter of;
family history that the turtle was
marked by his father and grand-J

town show? that Paul Maxson lived
on the farm In 1790.
Mr. Stillmao exhibited the turtle
for the edification of his friends and
completed the exhibition when he
added his own name and the date
1911 to the family record. Then
he turned the turtle adrift to re-.
turn to a Stillman of the next generation.
A Floor That Turns Over.
The floor in the Apollo Theatre
in Paris is reversible, one side being
made for dancing, the other
the usual inclined floor equipped
with the folding seats of a theatre
auditorium.
The floor is mounted on a horizontal
axis on which it revolves.
It is built on a framework of 6teel
grinders, has an aera of 2,500
square feet and weighs 100 tons.
The axis, which is parllel to the
front of the stage, is not in the
middle of the thickness of the
front of the stage, is hot in the
middle of the thickness of the
floor, says the Cement Age, but
nearer to the seating surface than <
to the dancing surface. The floor
swings through an excavation over
thirty feet in width.
Abbeville Farmer Finds Death in
Strange Way.
Abbeville, Aug. 13. ? Charles (
toil oi lj. 4j. iNicaeis, ol tne
Santuc section of this county, died
last night from the effects of
burns received last Friday, -when
he made an attempt at self-destruction,
with the result that his father's
barn and its contents were
destroyed.
Young Nickles had been suffering
for some time with melancholy
and Friday went into the barn on
his father's farm, covered himself
with fodder and set fire to it.
Others of the place were attracted
by the smoke, and with great difficulty
saved the young man from
immediate death. It was impossible
to check the flames, however,
and the building and its contents
were a total loss.
Young Nickles lingered until Fri-)
day, when death ended his suffering.
He was 22 years of age and j
had been farming with his father.
