would stagnate and property would
decrease in value.
The schools of a town provide
ample and satisfactory education
lor one's children, and its churches
meet and satisfy his religious needs
and conserve the moral and spiritual
interests -of the community.
Its newspapers keep him informed
on local matters, enlarge his knowledge,
help him in business, minister
to his enjoyment and that of
his family, and promote every wise
effort put fortn to help the best interests
of the town.
It is a great pity some other way
of handling the text book prob
iem connot be adopted. The present
plan has never given satisfaclon.
The State depository Is forced
to handle the books at 10 per
cent, profit and pay the freight
both ways. The retail dealer gets
only 10 per oent. on his sales and
a school boy knows that no class
of merchandise can be handled at
such small margin of profit without
loss to the dealer. Several weekj
ago The Herald pointed out the absurdity
of the school book situation
In this State, holding at the time
that the State depository should be
abolished and that retail dealers
should be given the privilege ol
buying the books direct from the
publishers. In the light of recenl
events we see no reason why we
should change our mind. The State
I board has further complicated and
demoralized the situation by making
sweeping changes, thereby placing
still greater burdens not only
upon the public but upon the deal
ers aa well. There was no excuse
for such action -on the part of the
Rt&te board and the matter should
be thoroughly investigated. The
Herald does not accuse any mem
b?r of the board of wrong-doing
but to pass this matter by with
indifference would he to encourage
official conduct of a more 3eriom
and aggravating nature.
