The Dillon Herald is published at
the County Seat of one of the rich- __
ost agricultural counties in the ~
State. It is the official organ of
the county and goes into 90 per
cent, of the homes in the county in
which it is published. The office
is equipped with linotype and mod-?rn,
high speed presses.

A. Therefore why the necessity for
carrying a pistol? It is imaginary
fear which causes a man to be
y afraid of another who "always car-!
ries his gun." The man who "always
carries his gun" acquired the
habit in the days of his youth when
he regarded it as a show of bravery
to display his weapon. He coveted
the reputation of a "dangerous
man." He wanted to be known I
among bis contemporaries as a "man
who would shoot." That is all very ;
well for a stripling of a youth who
believes the "world is his" and that
lie must assert his "manhood" before
he really acquires it. Of course
such a spirit is greatly to be de-'
jilored, but as it can't be prevented,
it must be tolerated until the fever
loaves and the youth gets well. But j
when the age of reason comes and j
the youth grown-up discovers that
this world is not such a dangerou s I
place to live in after all, that all]
his imaginary enemies have disap-,
tpeared and that foot-pads,murderers,'
thieves and thugs do not lurk in |
every convenient hiding place, he
continues to load his body down III

life and he feels uncomfortable;
without "his gun."
Pistol toting is u pernicious hah-'
it. It is almost as bad as drinking
and a great deal worse than chew-!
mg and smoking. It does not make
the public afraid of a man, but
makes the man afraid of himself,
lie is fully conscious of the fact that
every duy he breaks tho law and Ue
Cannot feel for himself as mucu respect
as he feels for the man who
tries to live by the law.
We are told that quite a number
of men in Dillon are pistol toter8.
We trust that our informant
nits exaggerated conditions. But a
new-comer told us recently that he
was "warned to go armed in Dillon
as everybody down there carried
suns." We know that "everybody
down here" does not carry "guns," {
but those who do should feel some
humiliation because their conduct
'\p.. has given Dillon such an unworthy
name.
The P. D. Baptist Association will
meet at Marion on the 28th, 29th
and ?Otb. The program will appear
next week.

The County Board of Commissioners
of Dillon oounty will sell $35,000
of the good roads and highways
improvement bonds on May 1st. All
bids should be in the hands of the
Clerk at 12 o'clock on this date. All
bidders are required to put up a
certified c#eck for $1,000 as a guarantee
of good faith.

Notice to Buildiug and Heating Contractors.
Sealed bids will be received in
the Court room, Dillon, S. C-, for
the construction of a court house
and jail building to be erected at
Dillon, S. C., until noon, May. 9,
1911.
Each bid for the construction of
the court house must be accompanied
with a certified check for $5,000
and for the jail building with a certified
check for $1,000. and for the
heating of the court house building
with a certified check for $200
made payable to T. A. Dillon, Chairman,
as a guarantee that if awarded
the oontract, the successful bidder
will promptly enter into contract
and furnish his bond as required
by specifications. The right is re- '
served to reject any and all bids.

Contractors wishing to bid may
obtain drawings and Specifications
from the Architect by depositing
with him a certified check for $25
as a guarantee that a bona fide bid
bid will be made on the work and
also as a guarantee that the drawings
and specifications furnish-*!
will be promptly returned to the
Architect, without cost to him. Each
contractor asking for drawings and
specifications, is required to state
whether he wishes the Court house
only, the jail only, or both, in his
request to the Architect.
Sub-contractors wishing to procure
drawings and specifications are
