While Curtiss and the Wrigh

the similarities with few of the ?lif

To the average person, a blpian
is an aeroplane with two wing
superimposed, and they are al
alike excepting that the Wright
have skids and have to start fror
a rail, while Curtiss uses wheel
and may start from any ordinar;
smooth ground. This difference i
an important one, as anyone whi
has seen both machines fly may tes
tify. The ease with which Curtis
looveS the ground within a few mo
tnents of the time he takes the ma
chine from its shed is in sharp con
trast with the work of getting tin
Wright machine started. It take
the combined effort of a dozen mei
to haul the Wright flyer urnuni
on its cumbersome wide-tire<
wheels and adjust it on the start
ing rail before it is nearly read;
for a flight as is the Curtiss ma
< nine at all times.
The difference in t!u Amerieai
!thc aims in their builders. Tin
machines are buili with distinctl:
different ends in view. While lioti
