It is noted in the Greensboro Telegram
that Air. K. Sternberger is
on the program for an address at
the big barbecue to he given by the
stockholders or the Cone Mills at
Greensboro to iheir employees on
July 4th. This is an annual occasion
at the Cone .Mills and usually
costs about $4000. Mr. Sternberger
is one the principal stockholders in
the mills and is a member >f the
board of directors.
rite county commissioners have
started out with the determination
to have good roads in Dillon county.
At the special meeting last Monday
the commissioners purchased S *
road plows, or scrapers, and will pro
vide a machine for each township.
This will enable road overseers to
do three times as much work us for
merly, and with a smaller road
, force the public roa.ls can be kept
in excellent condition.
Our readers are asked to pardon
the typographical errors in The
Herald these days. The Herald is
being set up on a linotype and it
will lie several weeks before the
linotype operator will become proficient
in the use of the machine.
We are moving into permanent quar
ters this week and next week the
first issue of the Herald will be
printed on its own presses. in a
few more weeks The Herald plant
will he complete and it is our purpose
to give our readers one of the
best weekly newspapers that it is
possible for modern machinery to
make.
The children of the Dillon and
I^atta Methodist Sunday schools enjoyed
a most delightful outing last
Thursday on their excursion to
Wrightsville Beach. The excursion
left Dillon at *5 o'clock a. in. and after
spending: a most delightful titne
at the seashore the c teufsionists returned
home that nig..t at 12 o'clocl
a little bit tired hut thoroughly delighted
with the pleasures of the
day. Quite a large crowd went froit
Dillon and another large crowd was
taken on at Latta. It was a grc^t
occasion for the children and they
will look forward to the next excursion
with pleasant anticipations.
It is learned from the Lattn Observer
that Mr. J no. I?. Dew, a progressive
citizen of that town, has
invented an air ship. The Observer
gives quite a lengthy description
of the air ship and is of the
opinion that it will rival the aeroplane
or the monoplane in mechanical
skill. Mr. Dew says Ills craft
will carry 12 passengers at a speed
of 12 miles an hour, or that it can
be geared to attain a speed of 40
or 50 miles an hour. Mr. Dew has
been working for sonic time on his
machine and will have it patented
just as soon as it is completed. It
may be remarked in passing that,
in addition to being a first-class
business man and abound good citizen
Mr. Dew is also a mechanical
genius and those who know him
believe that his machine will do all
is for it..

is very fond of chicken pic.
There will be an ice cream supper
at Mt. Zion church. Friday
night. July 8th. .under the auspices
of the Woman's Missionary Society,
and the proceeds will go for
the benefit of educating young ministers.
