Fought Thrf Young Bulls and Cm

(Prom the Japan Advertiser.)
A large hear made its appear
ance in the pasture of Masahoro
Soyo, Kitama province, and at
tacked a three-year-old bull, whicl
was munching grass. The paii
fought hartl to the death?of th<

Two other bulls which wei\

pasture were attracted bv tlu.
struggle and as soon as their mate
was killed, sprang u|xm the beat
with their united strength.
A desperate fight ensued foi
some time, but, unfortunately,
it resulted in the fall of the twe
revenging companions, after having
sustained severe wounds from
the paws of the wild animal. The
triumphant monster then took
the first bull in his grip and disappeared
into the valley, leaving
his tell-tale footprints in the soft
earth.

SNAKE LEAPS 1.400 FEET.
Two Wysox men had a thrilling
experience on Table Rock Moun
tain Monday afternoon, one whicl
they will not care to repeat.
As they were walking- on tin
mountain they came upon a larg<
copperhead snake which was en
joying: a sun bath 100 yards fron
the rock which gives the mountaii
its name. The men lookec
around for stones, but none tha
they could handle to good effec
could be found, nor was there j
good club at hand.
Taking sticks of good lengtl
thev attacked the snake, whicl
showed fight and struck at botl
men. Failing to land and no
liking the lashing of the sticks hi:
snakeshio started for the edo-e r?
the* mountain overlooking th<
river which flows at the base somi
1,400 feet below.
Reaching the edge of the table
rock which hangs out from th
mountainside a considerable dis
tance, the snake arranged itsel
in a peculiar shai>e, and then witl
a hiss half jumped, half squirmei
out into-the air. The men rushee
upon the shelving rock and peerei
over and watched the fearful de
scent of the snake, expecting t
see it strike the trees or protru
ding rocks down the mountainside
but it missed all these obstructions

snake would clear the Lchigl
tracks but as the distance wa
covered the snake seemed t<
straighten out, and, as the mei
vow, crawled through the air an<
succeeded in landing in deej
water with hardly a splash.
While they were watching t<
see if the snake came to the sur
face one of the men became dizz;
from peering over the edge of th<
. rock and would have followed th<
snake's awfnl example had no
his companion caught him just ii
time.
Some idea of the distanci
travelled by the cooperhead cai
be had when it is known that bu
few boys or men can throw a ston
so that it will strike in the rive
