Hrav K ?? " iiAYrrifcft r I . P The Dillon Herald. MHH.KKf.0 EVERY THURSDAY. " a R. JORDAN EDITOR. ^ VCRIPTION. $1.50 PER YEAR ? Knttrcd il tic puttulUcv at Dillon. S. C., a? (] .erniidc^M mail matter1 c Dillon. S. C. August 12. 190$. f a v If we had a thousand dollars we r would gladly give it to complete t the"Woman's Monument fund." J ? t The liquor fight in Charleston 1 must be pretty hot when The News a and Courier is too busy t<> compile 1: figures showing how cool Char- t leston is.. ? v If Marion contains less than 1 900 square miles there will have ^ to be some reduction in the area s of these large plantations we have ^ heard so much talk about. t . < That is a pretty mean son of t dispensaryite who tries to make , Section 1. of the Prohibition Act, say that "whiskev brought into ^ the state for personal use- is seizable anywhere it is found." This is coming up on the "blind , side" o!" the prohib'Zionists. ( If the farmers of upper Marion < - get an average of 12 cents for their : cotton the country will be swim- i m?ng in nioncy and there will be a record-breaking business this i fall. The prospect for a large ! vield of cotton was never britrht er and the opening of the cotton season will find the f&rmers and merchants owing: less than they have owed at the first of Sept:*niRjr her in half a score of years. The i Herald believes the country is i emerging: front the most critical period it has experienced since I the panic of '93. Every now and then one sees ' wnere a meeting: has l>cen called : in some section to discuss the ? question of good roads. It is well 1 enough to have these meetings ' but the question is do they ever 1 accomplish anything? It is a waste N of time and money to hold meet 1 ings on any question unless they 1 are productive of some good to some body or to some section. The time a has rnmp for thf? nrnnlp to upon some permanent and prac- v tical mnhod of improving the * highways and until this is done there will never be any noticeable improvement in tlx; condition of the roads. The time is not far r distant when the more progressive fi counties will issue bonds for road > improvement, and highways will q be worked by salaried overseers b just the same as railroads, but 1 why postpone taking this step when ? there ifc no economy in delay? " The easiest way to make cotton ^ bring the highest market price is , to auction it off and knock it down ^ to the highest bidder just lfke ^ tobacco is sold. If the price does not suit the farmer he is not com- a pelled to accept it and c*n store ^ his cotton in a warehouse and ^ keep it there until the market J advances. The local buyers should agree to meet at the cotton platforms at certain hours T during the day and there make their bids on the cotton instead of forcing the farmer to trot all over h town and lose a whole day in the effort to save a few points on each bale. The farmers have a * just complaint against the buyers d< in that the buyer seldom offers his "limit'' on the first bid, but bids ?< under the"limit'' and then tells the farmer to "go and see what t' llr. Blank will offer." This ^ method of buying and selling makes both bnyer and seller lose a lot of valuable time. Then tfa the farmer likes to market his cotton at the place where he finds the least trouble in disposing of ' GUARDING TOWER TREASURE The Tower of London has the lost ixirfeet system of burglar larms that has yet been dev'sed. >o a Daily Mail representative ras informed today when inquirng into the cause of th*> sudden niiricnnmonf irieit/irc fVw. ay. From Scotland Yard, from the iovernor's headquarters, and rom other places known only to few responsible officials, the . hole Tower can l>c closed eiectically within a few seconds, iven the ponderous pates at the diddle Tower, which weigh some uns, and through which visitors :>ass, swing toautomomatically, nd the escape of every one within s instantly barred. At the same ime an alarm bell rings to warn trarders, police and soldiers. In particular, the precautions n the apartment containing the >own jewels are of a most cientifically elaborate kind. One >r ether of the Beefeaters on dutv n the room has merely to press a mtton. whereupon the heavy do )i doses, the alarm bell below rings he other gates slam to and lock ind every *>erson within the Towci s instantly cut off from the outei vorld. "The man who can get aw a] with any of the Crown jewels de ierves them," observed a Towe official. "From where I am stand ing I could close every importati Joor and gate in the Tower in a short a time as it takes me to utte these words." It was mainly to insure the safe ty of the Crown jewels that tin system was installed. No order was issued for the elos jug of the Tower on Saturday when, greatly to their alarm, tin visitors found doors locked, bolte* imci oarreu against them tor abou Len minutes, preventin.tr any on' leaving the Tower. "The Tower simply closed? that is all,"' remarked an official 'Who caused it to do so we do no know. It might have been Scot land Yard, where the pressing o i button would imprison ever: soul within the Tower until th< police cave the signal for thei elease. Or it might have beei he Governor, anxious to lean vhether we were all at our posts \t any rate, it was none of thi ninor officials. "In fact, who closed the Towei nd why is a secret known onlj o the highest authorities. Then, /as no alarm?no attempt to seize he Crown jewels.''?London Mail. Surprise Marriage.
