April 8, 190W Since it has been learned tha a Chicago man eloped with hi mother-in-law we should not b surprised if the News and Cour ier discovers that the prcsen method o t handling liquor ii Charleston is impracticable. Every honest citizen of Soutl Carolina will rejoice over the de cision of the United States Su preme Court which annuls Judgi Pritchard's order for receivers fo the old state dispensary. It wil be recalled that the dispensar "winding up" commission wa enjoined by Judge Pritchard fron making certain investigations con nected with deals between the di < pensary and certain liquor con cerns, namely the Wilson Distil ling Co. and the Fleishman Co The object of the commission wa to get hold of Fleishman's and th Wilson Co's. books, but when th injunction was issued the cotnmis sion's hands were tied. The aj: peal from Judge Pritchard's com was carried on to the circuit com of appeals at Richmond where th lower court was sustained- Fror the circuit court of appeals it wer to the United States Suprem Court and the order was dissoh cd. The state has scored a bi victory. Had the United Stat< Supreme Court sustained Juds Pritchard the cases against tl dispensary grafters would ha\ been dropped and justice won have been cheated through a teel nicality of the law. It cannot be denied that VVooc bury Township has been in th lime-light during the past fei days. And the distressing pai of it is the brighter the ligh shines the more embarrassing be comes the position of our Mario friends. Roar after roar, that could b heard around the state, has gon up from Marion because Dillo wanted to "disfigure" th "historic old county" by cutting ol some of her territory, and now i develops that while Marion wa protesting against Dillon's gree she was strenuously working t force ?ne of her townships ove to Horry. Woodbury is cut of! from Horr by three miles of swamp and river and when the water is r high tide transportation is poss ble but exceedingly dangerous But our Marion friends woul meet this contingency by cor structing over this three miles t swamp a bridge solely for the at commodation o f the benighte Woodburvites. () f course i would cost thousands of dollars t construct this bridge but our Mai ion 'riends, according to the Cor way Field, have grown so mag nanimous of late that they woul take one-haif of the money outt. their own pockets and the hold the tax-payers up for ju: the other half. Great scheme, but is Woodbur willing? Not quite. Woodbur says it will take lots of money t keep up that three mile bride and if Marion is so anxious to pi Woodbury in close touch with court house why not use half tb money it would take in buildin the bridge and build mac; ' loads from Woodbury to Ma The Woodburyites are wise. But all the trouble lies no. Woodbury. Hocry has . bee M 'a:- . . ... , >v. ? "' rr O ' 'TV ' T*x f vV\T*.' ' J heard from. And Horry does no i take kindly t < the three-milt j bridge idea because the road ant bridge levy in Horry is high e nough already.y Forsooth, Wood bury's position is bewildering, a' _ well as unfortunate Her mothe: ? county is pushing her off on Hor ry and Horry refuses to takt - her in. Verily, she is like a step-chile among ]X)or relations. Anent the Right-of-Way. s e Mr- T. A. Dillon is in receipt t?f a petition liberally signed by t prominent citizens of Judson in n timating that they canno'. t>e expected to support the New County if the railroad is not brought by their town. , ti We do not blame the citizens - of Judson for wanting the rail road to conic by their town; e neither do we blame the citizens r of Gallavon for wanting the same 1 thing. Dillon is working hard v for the road bee"<use the Dillon=. ites believe this additional line ol 1 communication with the outside - world will help to build up their - town. But our Judsoti friends - are in error if they believe thai - Dillon is trying t<? puU the road ?. away from them. s When the citizens of Dillon met e and appointed a committee or e right-of-way that committee was ; instructed to secure a right-of >- way from within two miles ol t Clio into the town of Dillon. Nc *t particular route was suggestec e and the common understanding n was that the route preferred bj it the promoters of the new roai ,u would meet with the approval o t- the citizens of Dillon. So far as g we know the idea of running 1 wc ;s distinct routes from Clio to Dil re Ion was not born in a Dillonite': ie brain, but on the other hand be re longs exclusively to the gentle Id men who arc building the road l- Again, if any nvrnber of thi t- right-of-way committee has showi ip "a preference for any particula t- route it is purely a matter ol p. personal choice and does not conn t- from any citizen's meeting no id docs it reflect any well dcfinct ie sentiment in the town of Dillon k* Dillon has no preference in tlv matter It has friends at Judsoi and Gal la von and would be gla< to see the road go by both places if such were possible. As it can 1- not touch at both places Dilloi ie has left the selection of a route >v absolutely with the promoters anc rt will be "hands off," so to speak it Therefore if any person shoulc s- express a preference for eithei " route we trust our friends a Gallavon and Judson will not takt e it as a reflection of sentiment ir Dillon. " What Dillon wants is the Nev County and the new railroad ff too, if she can get it, and if effor it counts for anything she ill ge s both, but what she most desire; d just at this time is that one in f> torest shal. not conflict with th< r other, and to this .end every pa triotic New Countyite shoult y bend his energies. \ Use the hoggins Wrenchless Plow Stock The best ever made ?
