Few people know that the flag of the United States is older than those of the other great natious, says the New York Tribane. The Union Jack, thepreseut British emblem, dates from 1801. The French tricolor was adopt ed in 1794, and the German and Ital ian banners are no older than the ex isting administration of those conn- tries. The Spanish flag was first es tablished in 1785. On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress passed its memorable resolution that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate white and red, and that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation. It was afterwards decided to add a star for every new State admitted to the Union, bnt this is the only change that has been made from the form adopted by those men whe were prom inent it) establishing the government STORIES OF RELIEF. Surgeon in the United States Army Say* the Average f| 67 Inches. In a paper read by Maj. Henry S. Rilbourne, surgeon of the United States army, before the Association of Military Surgeonsbf the United States, he advocated the theory that the phys ical power of a race of people, and consequently their capacity for work, is measured by their average stature. For every inch of height between five and six feet the extreme breath ing capacity is increased eight cubic inches; the vital capacity being atita maximum at 35 years. A table of measurements of 190,621 native white Americans, accepted for the military service of the United States, shows that the number of men below sixty- three inches in height, is but little greater than that of the class above seventy-three inches. The most nu merous class is included between sixty- $even and sixty-nine inches, and thia standard class would have a greater chest girth than the average. The mean bight of 125 United States uaval cadets above the age of 23 years was 67.80 inches. As these meu are drawn from all parts and classes of the United States, they represent very nearly the typical phys ical development of the American peo ple of 25 years of age, Major Kilbourne concludes that the commingling strains of Celtic, Danish, Norwegian and German blood among our people have thus far worked no deterioration of physical quality. “Not so the swarthy, low-browed and stunted people now swarming to our shores. Absorbed into the body of the people, these multitudes mnst in- _ evitably, evolve an inferiority of type. ’ 4be xeituit tjf“8lielC & dbritin- i geucy, let it be Considered that the people—and such feels are many—is re corded by a New York paper. A letter was received at the postoffice in that city addressed simply: "To my mother, New York. America." The letter come from Ireland, but ns there are In New York several women who have sons in Ireland, the postofflee people despaired of finding the right one. However, the letter was turned over to the deciphering department. Now It so happened that on the very day of its receipt there an Irish woman came to the general window and said: “Have ye a letter from me b’y?” The fact that a woman with the cast of mind required for such an inquiry should come at that time, struck the clerk, who had heard of a letter for a woman whose name was not given, as something more than a coincidence. It was quite possible that such a woman might be the mother of such a son. So he took the letter, observed the postmark, and asked the woman where her “b’y" lived. She gave the name of the place with which the letter was stamped. Some other questions were asked and the answers noted down. Then the clerk gave the woman the let ter, on the condition that she should open It on the spot and return it if it were not for her. She opened It, and lo! its contents proved conclusively that It was really from her son In Ireland. After the Midway Plaisauce had had its season of pictusesque glory, those of its inhabitants who were really sav ages returned to their original homes and settled down to tell stories of what they had seen. Quite properly their fellow savages have stamped them as monuments of inveracity. A recent traveler encountered some of these lights of the Midway in their native surroundings, where savagery has had a thin veneer of elementary education from the missionaries. Here was a chance for the Midway people to prove themselves tellers of plain truth, and they were quick to take advantage of the opportunity. Among the stories of the returned Midway folk was an account of the cable car. “There is a road,” said the savago traveler. “It is made of two long strips of hard metal such as the white people make the knives of. In tha middle is a long hole in the ground. There is a chariot which stands on tha metal road. You get into the chariot aud a white man pokes a bar of metal into the long hole. Then the chariot goes faster than any man can run.” “Is this lie true?” asked the stay- at-home savages. Assured as to this point the nntrav- eled folk asked why the chariot should go when the bar was stuck into tha hole in the ground. “Verily,” said the savage who had been to Chicago, “verily you are a most foolish people, who learn much and know nothing. Do you not re member that the missionaries taught us in school that the earth goes around and around?”—New York Sun. gan taking them last November hit expert- tlaftre- I am now ave been bad taken six boxes, taking the eleventh box and greatly benefited.
