1‘rarticnlly Fuexplored and Contain Over
Forty Species of Hard Wood.
Among the many sources of
wealth existing iu Cuba not the
least important is timber. “Cu
ba,” said a prominent lumber
merchant, “contains 17,000,000
acr s of virgin forest, iu which are
to be found upward of 40 species
of valuable hard woods. The lum
bar industry, like, iudeed, most of
the island’s resources, has been
neglected under Spanish rule.
These great forests are practically
unexplored. They have certainly
never been surveyed by experts,
though they will be mines of
wealth for the first lumberman
who exploits their contents. As
for the exports of wood, about
8220,000 a year, they represent a
small fraction of the possible pro
duct. The wood which comes to
market in largest quantity from
Cuba is cedar, which is wonder
fully abundant in Piuar del Rio
and the east. But the trade in
cedar is badly managed. What
with bad packing and general
shiftlessness, more than half the
wood is lost or useless before it
reaches this country.
“Other woods which we have
been in the habit of getting from
Cuba are mahogany and hngum
vitae, both very plentiful. The
common mahogany of the island
is the best there is and sells in
this country and Europe at from
f 110 to $180 per 1,000 feet. Ar«
other kind called figured or birds-
eye fetches from “
iudeed, to sell aa high at fl^50*
The Cuban lignum vitae, the fin
est known, is much in demand,
bringing from $25 to $40 a ton,
the extra quality $45. And there
are many other woods which would
be valuable if only brought to
market.—New York Sun.

About one month ago my child,
which is fifteen months old, had
an attack of diarrhoea accompanied
by vomiting. I gave it such rem

cases, but as nothing gave relief,
we sent for a physician and it was
under his care for a week. At this
time the child had been sick for

twenty-five operations of the

Florence is in the Lead.
Mr. Gus. McSween sold two
barns of tobacco on the Florence
market yesterday weighing 1,416
pounds for $171.60 net. This is
not claimed as a high average, but
it beats cotton and shows that the
Florence tobacco market is in the
lead for high prices.
