The Dewey Eagle in an article under the caption “Our Policy” has this to say: “But the hope of fhe Dewey Ea gle is, that reason and American Christian manhood may triumph over that form of fogyish con servatism which like the supersti tious narrowness of heathen Chi na, would hold cn to the ancient views and traditions which find support in what is called the Mon roe doctrine. If conquest means in its final outcome the enlightenment and moral elevation of the inhabitants of the territory that we acquire, and if such advancement by them is made to depend upon the domi nation of American thought and methods, and if such domination can only result from colonial an nexation, there is nothing more certain than that conquest and humanitarianism are necessarily blended in the same aggressive movement- The mental light-weights that cry out against territorial expan sion upon the ground that the war was commenced in the interest of Cubans, ate too little to retain great thoughts without doing vio lence to their nervous systems, and are totally incapacitated to deal with broad or complicated ques tions. Bryan, Senator Jones, Grover Cleveland, Senator Ed munds, President McKinley, and a host of others, believe in the policy and traditions of the fathers, be cause they are safe and well tried. Of course ihe Dewey Eagle would bo unworthy of its name did it not take bold flights, but some people don’t want Dewey’s con quest.
