The Columbia correspondent of
News and Courier of yesterday in
speaking of the dispensary profits
to be paid Timmonsville says:
‘‘The action of the State Board in
withholding profits applied only
to the city of Florence.” We were
not aware of this. What has
Florence been doing, or not do-
log?
Since writing the above wo have
ascertained the following facts in
regard to the dispensary profits in
Florence county. There has been
no order from the State Board for
the disposition of these profits.
The money is still here and it is
a mistake that Timmonsville is to
get her share and that the city of
Florence to be withheld.
The reason that nothing ht s
been done, as we are informed
by an ex member of the board, is
that there is now only one quali
fied memter of the local board,
Mr. W. B. White, of Timmons-
ville.
An additional reason is, perhaps,
that suits have been entered
agaiust'the county for the looting
of the dispensaries at Florence and
Timmonsville.

We take from the News and
Courier that at the meeting of the
Municipal League now going on
at Detroit, Mich., Mayor Smyth
is represented as saying that there
is more drunkenness under the
dispensary system than formerly.
The question is asked by a corres-
pondentof that paper, if the Mayor
of Charleston was misquoted and
then the questioner goes on to
■ay:
“I venture to say that, if called
upon, every mayor and intendant
in South Carolina, outside of
Charleston, would admit that
drunkenness has decreased in his
city or town since the enactment
of the dispensary law.”
We think it is generally
admitted that there is less drunk
enness under the dispensary sys
tem than formerly.
It has never been attacked upon
the high ground that it is a pro
moter of drunkenness as compared
with the license system, even by
prohibitionists. The battle has
been waged on other lines.
