A PETTY HOPHIMM. We publish in another column a letter of Mr. W. F. Clayton ad- dresed to the Reform Advocate and the Times Mkbbenuek. In that letter he says : “But a* a friend of the Hon. James Norton we would be recreant to ourself if we did not resent the seemingly concerted attack upon his private character made by your papers iu yesterday’s issue.” Here is what we said, the day after the issue of the Reform Ad- cate: “The Congressional race iu the Sixth District is warm. We con fess to some ignorance about those “five specific affidavits” affecting Mr. Norton, but hope and believe that ho will come out of the battle unscathed. It is hard to think of Mr. Norton otherwise than as hon orable and trustworthy.” As to, the Times, Mr. Clayton has shot over the house and miss ed the mark. To construe the foregoing article as an attack upon the private character of Mr. Norton is a petty sophism that will not bear discussion. We leave it to Mr. Norton and the public to decide, Mr. Norton is not entirely un. known to us. We know him, per haps, as well as does Mr. Clayton, and we think the best evidence of what he is, is the esteem and con fidence which, we are told, are giv en him at home. As to the affidavits, they are like petitions: easily gotten up— and then; net alwayw witk—tUo in tention to swear falsely, but through the misapprehension and perversion of the facts growing out of the ordinary transactions of life. We don’t know'that Mr. Norton is hurt and believe that he will by his own methods and in a dignified way, in due time, show’ to the country what the charges against him are worth. We reassert that any canvass is conducted on a low plane when any candidate seeks office, not by showing his own merits to the peo ple in a proper way, but by de faming the private life and char acter of his neighbor. Sunday at the Churches. The pulpit at the Presbyterian church was filled by Rev. James Thornwell, of Fort Mill. In the morning a good congregation greeted him, and he in turn gave the congregation something good. His sermon was on Christ’s ability to save and was argumentative in its nature. Dr. Thornwell has an earnest, winning manner in the pulpit, and his discourse as a whole was sound, practical, uplifting, exhibiting clearly the intellectual strength of the man. At night a union service was held at this church and Dr. Thorn well preached again. Tlje congre gation was large, and the sermon as in the morning was beautifully impressive and full of meat. Rev. V. I. Masters, travelling representative of the Baptist Courier, preached at the Baptist church in the morning. Mr. Mas ters is a young preacher of ability. His sermon yesterday was upon the importance of paying attention to the little things in business and in social life. It was a splendid deliverance, and to-day has been spoken of in the highest terms. The foregoing were our visiting ministers. Rev. R. W. Barnwell, rector of St. John’s Episcopal church, oc cupied his pulpit. He preached as he always preaches—with earn estness and power. The other churches of the city were closed. Boils Indicate LMseased Blood. If not cured they lead to car buncles and running sores. Boils, or their more aggravated form of carbuncle, surely indicates a diseased condition of the blood, which should have prompt atten tion on the appearance of the first symptoms, or they may lead to more serious diseases. Eat the best you can get, and freely use Botanic Blood Balm (B. B. B.) Mrs. W. A. Steed, of Augusta, Ga., had boils for several years past, as well as a carbuncle over the right eye. This spring she felt the symptoms of boils coming on again. While sewing she would prick the skin with her needle. The little sores would fester. She took two bottles of Botanic Blood Balm (B. |g. B.) and was entirel cured, and she passed the spring without the an- noying boils and possible return of a carbuncle. Her blood was re lieved of a poison matter by B. B. B., which is a powerful blood remedy. J. D. Watkins, Blakely, Ga„ writes: “Old sores covered my entire person and itched intensely night and day. For several months I could not work at all. I com menced the use of Botanic Blood Balm (B. B. B.) and began to grow better the first week, and am now sound and well, free from sores and itching, and at work again.” Botanic Blood Balm (B. B. B.) is a scientific vegetable compound used by Ur. Gilman in his private practice for blood diseases such as old seres, scrofula, boils, blood poison, etc. It cured so many people that it was put on the mar ket 17 years ago and is for sale by all druggists at ?i.oo per large bottle. It has always enjoyed a large sale because it cures! cures! cures! even after everything has been tried in vain, it cures because B. B. B drives the poison out of the blood and body. Book of cures sei£free of charge. Blood ^alm Co., Atlanta, Ga. It is stated that Secretary Alger will withdraw all troops from the South and place them in Northern camps. His determination is based on the amount of sickness developed at Cluckamauga. rtou Havt<d.
