THE CONSUMER PAYS
Following are some comparisons of
the tariff rates imposed by the Ford
ney-McCumber measure recently
passed by congress. The figures »p
ply to articles of every day use as
food and are worth study. They
show that it Is the consumer who
will have to pay the bills.
It is perfectly obvious that the tar
iff \vill enrich the manufacturers, for
the prices will go up with the in
creased tariff iuties while <he cost
of manufacturing will be no more
than It is now 'and there are< some
farmers who believe that the tariff
on their products will .help them, but
thev forget that the surplus agricul
turai production in this country must
be sol dabroad, where no tariff wHi
raise the price, and wherever this
surplus is sold the price level will he
fixed there.
Sugar, which pays a duty of 1.25
cents a pound (with a .provision for
Us ultimate free entry) will hnreaf
ter be taxed 1.84 cents a oounl for
Cuban and 2.03 cents a pound for all
other foreign kinds.
The increase in the tariff on sugar
will give (he Suga rTrust not less
than $115,000,000 additional profits
each year.
Beef, (fresh) is free at present but
wHI be taxed 3 1-2 cents a pound
hereafter.

to drive an automobile while intoxi
cated. He endangers the lives of
others as well as his own. If he en
