11,000 Shots a
Minute Tried by
' "'Noiseless Gun
Clothed. In strict secrecy and at
tended only by officers of the Army
and government scientists, experi
ments are being made at the bureau
of standards on a large-caliber ma
chine gun, from which bullets are pro
pelled at a high rate by centrifugal
force. The weapon is practically
soundless in operation, and if perfect
ed will have a revolutionary effect
upon the use of small arms in modern
warfare.
The gun consists of a rotating bar
rel with a bore of approximately one-
half inch. This barrel is attached to
a shaft whicli is caused to rotate by
motor-driven gears at varying speed.
The projectiles which are one half-
inch caliber and spherical in form,
are fed into the gun bj - an automatic
feed, obtaining a speed, or muzzle
velocity, of approximately 920 foot
seconds at 8,000 revolutions per min
ute of the gun barrel, 1,135 feet per
i second at 10,500 revolutions and 1210
feet per second at 11,000 revolutions
per minute.
Penetrate Seven-Inch Wood
The penetration of the projectile is
about seven inches of prne wood at
I, 20t) feet per second' at a distance of
six inches from the muzzle of tho
rifle. The gun can maintain a rate
of fire of one shot per revolution, or
II. 000 shots for 11,000 revolutions per
minute. However, any rate of fire
can be maintained, according to the
number of projectiles that are fed into
the barrel at the will of the opera
tor. It can he-handled for traverse
fire in much the same manner as an
ordinary machine gun. and is design
ed for light armored cars, tanks and
airplanes.
One important feature of the gun
is that it does away with the use of
powder or other explosives as a
means to propel the bullets. ( entri-
fugal force throws the projectiles for
ward.—-Washington Post,
