The Tobacco Horn Worm Clcmson College, June 22.—Reports from tobacco growers indicate consid erable trouble this season from hook worms. The following suggestions for control of these pests is made by R. E. Currin, Superintendent of the Pee Dee Experiment Station, in Ex tension Bulletin 43, Tobacco Culture ‘ in South Carolina, which may be had i upon application. | When the worms make their first appearance, the tobacco is usually small and they are easily poisoned, or if not too numerous may l»s picked off. by hand. The arsenical sprays or powdars arh the best 'means for controlling ihcty pests. Without this control measure very lit tle tobacco could be raised in South Carolina. Before the use of poisons became general, del is of tobacco I‘were entirely destroyed by these ' worms. . •• Arsenate of lead either as a spray or in powdered form is considered the best poison to uso. Paris green is apt to burn tbe leaves if applied too heavily in the dry form. Arsenate of lead In the powdered form adheres to the leaves better thau does Paris geen in the same form. Usually, one pound of either of thcsc'in dry form i ssufficient for one acre, if used in the form of a spray, one pound fo 40 or 50 gallons of water may be used, if care is taken to keep the solution well agitated. Spraying apparatus and dry powder guns are for sale in all tobacco growing sections Use the control methods as often as necss sary. Special pains must be taken to destroy the first crop of worms, as by so doing much trouble may be avoided in controlling the second crop of worms. If the tobacco matures as It should, however, most of it will be harvested before the second crop of worms appears. * First Woman Sheriff I ^ Of Great Southwest Duncan, Oklu, .lun*} 22- The first Woman sheriff of the Southwest whs installed recent'y when Mrs. • Willis in Gates tcok the oath of offi ce sts^sherifT of Stephens county here.
