BALKED At “WASTING LIQUOR*' Action of Chief ef Secret Service That Caused Retainer to Resign Hie Position. They tell the story of Rnjre R!e- laskl. head of the United Blares secret service, and one of bis retainers. , In the old days—before the late tin- pleasantness—the retainer might have been described as a scholarly slpper. He knew the brands, origin, habitat and beading 01 every first-rate whisky. When he drank he acted like one of the old brandy topers, who have been statutorily obliterated. Y'Hft would eye and sniff and roll the ol«f stuff around In his mouth before the clamorous throat muscles pulled it down. He revered whlsjty. His sole reading was whisky rending. He was not a drunkard at all, you will under stand—merely an enthusiastic connois seur of liquor. Blelaskl had a room full of whiskies at his Wa&itlngtou headquarters. No oue got Into that room, either. Every time there was a raid the stuff wan placed under lock and key until Bie- tnski personally superintended Its de struction. The connoisseur of hoor.e used to mourn this waste with tears In his eyes. He said it Nvn* a crime, too less. Hd said he is now convinced that this Country is barbarous, and that In Its heart it yearns to wear beads on its legs and feathers in its hair. He was orating in this strain one bitterly cold dfty during the big blizzard when he saw' Blelaskl come out of his office. Bielaski had a couple of quarts of a celebrated brand under his arm. 1 He stopped talking. " Little flecks of foam appenred in the corners of his mouth. He began In dream-of Tennes see meads and Kentucky pastures. His eyes softened and his cheek took "on a younger flush. Then Bielaski poured the liquor in the radiator of his automobile, and the entlijisiast violently, resigned from the federal service.—Herbert Corey, in Kansas City Star. BLAME MEXICAN “HOT STUFF” Pepper end Fiery Liquor* May Hav* Something to Do With the Troubles Down There. Pepper is the source of Mexican revolutions, according to many people. Hot tamales, chill con carne. wliich means pepper with meat: chili rel- lenas. chill con qutoso. or pepper with cheese; ail the other hot dishes that delight the Mexican palate, are sup posed to incite these fiery Latfn-Indian folk to actions that people df more sober mien would not contemplate.- Hut the border 4 citizens of this coun try place the greater blame on th* liquid refreshments indulged in by our neighbors to the south. Aguar diente, tequila, mescal, drinks that rouse stormy passions In the I^ntin nnd paralyze the senses of the Anglo- Saxon, are consumed in great quanti ties. Tequila, father of comets, sea sen pents, misshapen giants, juggernauts and a thousand other monsters. Is a white liquid brewed from “bear grass,” a desert growing plant with clusters of thick, hard nnd watery dnggerlike leaves with needle points. Mescal, a brew of cactus leaves, Is its companion drink, and. mixed, the very smell will put even a prohibition en forcement agent in a state of coma. Canada’s Water Fewer. , It has been estimated by engineer* that the available water power In Canada, both developed and undevel oped, is capable of generating 18.832.- 000 horsepower, of which 7,398.100 horsepower are available in populated areas. The utilization of this water pow er is rapidly increasing. During last year the installation of plants was completed with a total of 64.400 horse power. Developments now under con struction will produce 370.000 horse power: and projects contemplated for the near future will add 750.000 horse power. The waterpowers In Canada already developed have a rapacity of 2.400.000 horsepower. The “white coal.” that for ages had been running to waste,' Is now’ being made to turn the wheels of Industry and to light Canada's streets and dwellings. The Noisy Gue£t. William Jennings Bryan said at his brother's house in Lincoln : “It Is splendid to see Hie good order that now’ prevails at political ban quets. There whs considerable drunk enness at these banquets In the past. "At a political banquet one evening the chairman said to a rather noisy guest: “‘Excuse me, sir, but may I ask ytonr name?’ , “ ‘Morgan's me—hie—name,’ '.'•h* guest answered. “ T mean your full name,' said the chairman. “The guest hiccoughed again. “ • It’s Just the same,' he said, ‘full or ■ober.’” .The Way It Work* Out The Agent—Have you seen the new ordinance passed by the city council! It forbids rent profiteering under pen alty of a hundred-dollar fine. The Owner—Yep, I saw It. Raise the rent a hundred dollars on each apartment, to pay the fines. Improving Hie Method. Atlas was watching the proceedings of the profiteers. “The** modern fellows,” he mused, "kno;/ a lot more about holding up the enrtb-th;in was dreamed of in mjr young days.” FOR SHERIFF I hereby announce myself a can didate for the office of Sheriff ol Florence county and pledge mynojf to abide by the ritle/i of the Demo cratlc party. .Appreciating the sup port of the people of the count.?
