*• Chicago, June 10.—The third day of the Republican
convention opened with the party machinery deadlocked.
No agreement has been reached either as to the proba
ble presidential candidate or even tentative drafts of the
vital planks of the platform.
Overnight the League o? Xations issue swept sudden
ly upwards to a position of overshadowing importance., al
most of menace, in the party councils.
A special harmonizing committee appointed on the.
platform split after hours of fruitless labor toward a com
promise. Unable to agree on any declaration proposed
to be incorporated in the platform, the sub-commitee ad
journed along after midnigh t. The report of dV agree
ment in the sub-committee faced the full committee on
resolutions when it assembled todav.
Meanwhile the condition i tself must mark time. Xo
real progress could be made with its work and another
early adjournment seemed likely.
Undefinable rumors of serious
tional leaders were abroad today.
and what delegations would walk out in that case. Xo-
body could say, however, from where this talk came.

ice met again today with the League of Nations plank t,,al would surely cure his wife of
stm tl^atenms a party pHt, a tentative foreign relations %SXSZZS?'S.'gt
plank was underconsideration declaring opposition to the
treaty with reservations but favoring its ralica'tion with
Americart rights safeguarded.
This plank was framed after an all night session but
had not been accepted by the irreconcilablcs. The tenta
tie draft also condemned President Wilson’s American
policy, and declared that no Mexican regime could be
considered until it was willing and able to give adequate
guarantees of protection to American rights. Pledges
of the Republican party were incuded to a "consistent,
firm and effective policy toward Mexico that shall enforce
respect for the American flag." and protect American
citizens and property. Xo direct reference was made to
intervention in Mexico.
The proposal for the mandate over Armenia was con
demned and the action of Congress in passing the peace
resolution was approved. 000**
Tt was indicated that although reference to the League
of Xations is still in a formative stage the sub-commit
tee probably would accept the tentative draft as far as it
relates to Mexico, Armenia and the peace resolution.

No Definite News
The wire to Dr. McIntyre came at

that Mr. Davis had shAt and killed
Mrs. Davis and then slew himself.
That “Billy K.” had been extremely
