NEW YORK HOPES IEACHERS ELECTED CONGRESS HURRIES TO OUTSTRIP LONDON j FLORENCE SCHOOLS JO CLOSE SESSIONS IN POPULATION Census Figures Of Metro polis Will be Announc ed Tonight. ESTIMATE 6,000,000 London’s Official Census to Be Taken In 1921. Rafce Close. Npw York, June 5—New York city's population will l.-e announced tonight, i Indications are that it will show ai population larger than tli last' available figures for London. The race for largest city in thoj world, however, will be undecided ‘ until London’s official census of 1921 is announced. ^ VIKi YV hile no official intimation has been given as to the growth of New) York during the last 10 years, as wil'.i be shown bv the enumaration made in January, estimates of the city! proper place the total population at| about fi,100.000 and for the nodropo-j litan district of New York, consist-j ing of the city proper and the terri tory 10 miles grom its boundaries. I *t about 8,200,000. These estimates arc computed on the Census Hureau’s method of arithmetical progression! shown by experience to lie nearer in j accuracy in the majority of cases! than any other formula. Statistics for the city proper will he the first given out; the figures for the metro-, politan district will not he available upMI some time later. i London's population, according fo the latest available statistics which are estimated for 1917, give the popu lation for Registration London, the J/ondon for census purposes, as t,-| 026,901 and for Greater London, coin-1 prising the City and Metropolitan 1 police districts and covering a ra-j dins of 15 miles from Charing Cross, as 6,276,752. Many factors have entered into the, growth of both New York and Lon-j don since tbeir last official counts were taken. The war officials hera beftetT* hns had its effect on the! growth of both cities. New York i.-' believed to 'have suffered from the! stoppage of the stream of immigra tion, a large portion ol which in pie viotia decades has settled there. War industries are thought to have added to New York's population and also to a greater extent to that of London W'hero huge war plants were erected by the Ffritlsh Government. I,on- don’s losses of her men at the front were considerable and these are ex pected to affect her total population to some extent. I . June 4—That the schools of tlie state have been crowded take care of the attendance during the past school session, but that many new schools are being erected and additional school levies voted, are some of the striking features shown in reports nnching the state hoard, of education in Columbia, fo lowing the closing of the schools. A large part of tile schools of the state have closed their doors for the 1919- 1920 session. A few of the large high schools are yet open, hut their com mencement exercices come jluring the next few days. State. High School Superintendent ,i, A. Stoddard stated today that ho believed the reports, when all in. would show an increase?! enrollment of thirty thousand pupi’s in the pub lic schools this past session. The overcrowded conditions are due iii part to the working of the compulso ry attemlanch law and also to the prosperity *of the land, education is becoming more popular in.South Caro lina, it is said. Mr. Stoddard has been busy during the last few weeks sending out •di plomas for the high schools. Every high school graduate in the state is given a diploma signed by Mr. Stod dard, State Superintendent of Edu cation J. E. Swearingen and Gover nor Cooper. About' a thousand diplo mas have boon signed by those offi cials recently. i R. L. OSBORNE WILL NOT STAND FOR REELECTION TO OFFICE. Florence Times bureau, Wyn# A.
