Darlington Men Buy
Block In Savannah
Savannah, Ga., Juno 3.—A syndi
cate of Darlington, S. C., business men
' composed of Messrs. W. C. Edwards,
Abram Hyman and Smiley Vaughn
has bought the Chatham Artillery
Hall an dthe other buildings in the
I block bounded by Bull, state, Whitaker
and President streets. The sale was
consummated Monday by Messrs. L.
H. Smith and George A. Mercer, act
ing fo rthe Savannaa Hank and Trust
Company, which is owner of the
block. Mr. W. H. Stillwell also had
a part in the transaction.
The Price
While there has been no official
announcement of Cue price paid for
the block it is understood to have
Inen $210,000. The deal is one of the
largest made in Savannah real estate
in a long time and disposes of prop
erty that is very valuable because o:
its location and because of the senti
ment connected with it.

One Hundred Who Quit at Atlanta
Terminals Will Return Today.
A'.lJnla, June 3.—The first impor
tant break in the ranks of the strik-
| ing railway clerks was announced
jhere last night by L. L. McDonald, as-
| sistant superintendent of transpor i
tation at the Atlanta Joint terminal, 1
who stated that the 107 clerks who
quit at the terminals had advised him
they would return to work this morn
ing.
This action followed a warning is
sued late yesterday by the terminals
company that the positions would be
filled if they did not return by this
morning. The Central of Georgia rail
way, on which the strike began a
fortnight ago, issued a warning a
week ago and is said to have filled its
vacancies here, as the employees re
fused to return.
J. W. Nelson, a vice president of the
clerks’ brotherhood, wuo has upheld
the clerks’ action, stated last night
that 650 clerks had gone out during
the last day or so in Winston-Salem.

Columbia, June 3—For the relief of
freight traffic conditions of the coun
try and for the consideration of rate
and other traffic problems, are rail
roads of the country have announced
the re-establishment of “Terminal
Committees,” which were In exist
ence prior to federal control. The
committee for handling matters from
the Southeastern territory will he
located at Atlanta, and will be com
posed of one representative of the
carriers, one representative of the
shippers and one of the railroad com
missions.

At the Railroad Y. M. C. A., Tues
day evening. June first, an Interesting
and enjoyable Safety Rally was held
commencing at eight thirty o clock.
A large number of Atlantic Coast Line
employees including members of their
families were in attendance.

A motion picture film entitled
•‘Careless America” loaned by the
Universal Film Company. 1600 Broad
way, New York, was shown and creat
ed a good impression on those who
were so fortunate as to see it.
The Address of the evening was
given by Mr. Robert Scott. Chairman
o fthe General Safety Committee,
headquarters at WilmingHm, North
Carolina. Mr. Scott presented in a
most at.ractive manner the scheme
of organization for carrying on the
work of accident prevention, on the
Atlantic Coast Line system and made
particular mention of the fine results
that had already been accomplished
hv the method employed. Much en-,

to the fact that the Atlantic Coast i
Line, during the National Railroad ■
Accident Prevention Drive, jasting
two weeks, during October, 1919, head j
ed the list of all railroads in the Unit-1

sand employees, thereby winning a
signal success over all other roads
that entered into the contest. Mr.
Scott spoke with much feeling when
mentioning this feature because of
the splendid cooperation received at
the hands of all cmployeoji on the roan
while this drive was In progress. The
film entitjed “Safe and Unsafe
Practices in Yards,” loaned by the C.
U. I. & P., was exhibited and the
keenest sort of interest was manifest
ed by the railroad men present be
cause the scenes depicted on the
screen were so realistic. It is believ
ed the Rally will produce good re
sults la the work of conservation of
life and limb among railroad employ
ees. The success of the Rally was
largely due to the efforts of Mr. A. I.\
Love and MY. J. V. Miller, secretary
of the General Safety Committee, and
Supervisor of Safety, headquarters
at Wilmington, North Carolina.
