SATURDAY MAY 29, 1920 tit FINE FOR FLORENCE Vr'-’ ' I ; ' ' 1 J ' * The News and Courier gives first place on Its splendid editorial page tO an article under the caption “Florence’s Fihe Record.’’ “No oth er town in South Carolina,” as far as present information , goes, it says, “has grown so rapidly in the past decade." The News and Courier points to this city’s growth -as an ’irtdex to the growth of the wonder- section of which Florence is the ItPy .city.” There is no better booster for the Pee Dee section than the News and Courier. Th:s more than cehtury-old and internationally fam ed Journal has always championed tbfe Pee Dee country, and has played bin small part in its development, li is therefore gratifying to the ffatys and Courier to be able to re- cprd further instances of a growth tp which it refers gs wonderful, and the continued Interest of this great, newspaper is no less gratifying to the people Of this country which is no doubtf the finest in the world. The Ga<5e City of the Pee Dee lias idost decidedly outstripped ‘any cltjj of Us approximate size in SoiHb -Carolina in the rapidity of Us growth in thepast decade. It lias. Jumped from 7,057 in 1910 to 10,958 in 1929r an increase of SOli, or 55.42 per cent. "So other town in South Caro lina, the census figures for which have thus far been announced has grown so raplldy in the past decade. Hartsville and Kings- tree are next, but both of these towns are much smaller than Florence. In towns of relatively tjie same size the percentage of growth has averaged less than half that which Florence has 'at tained. Of, larger towns, Colum- Va sshowed up with 42.6 per cent, bpt.a large part of Columbia’s in- Crease was the result of taking in suburbs. Florence has almost eleven thousand people. Florence citi zens were expecting “larger fig ures,” according to one of her leading business men who was here for the Furniture Dealers’ convention but this was perfect ly natural. He was sure the fig ures wouk! be close to fourteen thousand. ■“Florence claims a circular area with a mile radius from the center of the town. This is some larger thah ours but . the differ ence in area would not account for ail of the difference in popula- j lion. And the mystery deepens when one recalls that Florence has no factories. It is a big rail road center and the railroad shops employ a large number of men but what in the world do the test of the 4 folks do for a living?. “The figures announced yester day put Florence ahead of Ander son and makes Florence the fif th city of the State in population. Florence comes right after Spar tanburg. The town that we are interested in most, right now, is Rock Hill. Sumter is still ahead of us, comijig .after. Anderson. Ten years ago the rank of the smaller towns was in this way: Sumter, Florence, Rock Hill anti Greenwood,.
