pPPOSES PAYMENT IN BONDS
—<— |
Washington, May 25.—The Treas
ury’s oppositibu to any plan by which
Liberty bonds would be accepted in
payment of Federal taxes was express
ed in a letter from Assistant Secre
tary Leffingweii to a correspondent.
Mr. Leffingweii declared that such a
program would force the Treasury to
replace by fresh borrowings money
which it would have received iu
taxes. *
The acceptance of bonds in tax pay
ment, Mr. Lfefingwell said, would
merely mean that the long-term debt
would he decreased, while the short
term or floating debt, which,is made
up of Treasufy certificates of indebt
edness, would lie increased corres
pondingly. He believed this would
also have a depressing effect on Lib
erty bond quotations, which recently
fel Ito a new low level.
This has been attributed to prohibi-
tion. Millions of pounds of candy are |
consumed by people who formerly
took stimulants of some sort freely at
public dispensaries. None of this ex
cessive use of sugar relates to the
family table. There is also a large
increase if sugar used In preserving.—
