At a recent meeting of the executive committee of the South Carolina de partment resolutions were passed placing the department on record as being opposed to the Logon waging a campaign for the bonus. The statement does not go into a dis mission of the merits or demerits 6t the bonus, but leaves such matters en tlrcly to congress, the department bo tng. the statement *-nds, “unalterably opposed to a campaign in its selfish Interests. The statement follows in detail: | i'i •!*lw| , "The sUtc convention of the de partment of South Carolina left the matter of a bonus to the delegation to the national convention, and the delegation voted unanimously for the 1 American Legion to be hands off. The national convention passed resolu tions leaving the matter to congress, feeling that it could not ask for leg islation in if? selfish interest. “The national executive committee at a meeting held February 10 and at a subsequent meeting held March 22 decided to advocate a bill asking for the bonus. i “iThe department of South Caro lina will not co-operate with the nat ional organization in waging a cam paign for the bonus for two reasons: I “1. The national executive commit tee went beyond its jurisdiction in re versing the national convention, for the executive committee Is an admin istrative body and the convention the legislative body. “2. It is inconsistent with the prin ciples on which the American Legion was founded. . “The department of South Carolina does not go into discussion ot whether the bonus is advisable: whether the country can afford it the merits or demerits of the question. •It leaves such matters entirely to con gress. Columbia, April 23.—Three hun dred of the prominent lawyers of South Carolina are 'expected to at tend the convention of the South Carolina Bar Association which meets in Columbia today and Saturday and a committee of prominent Columbia lawyers in charge of the details for the convention state that it will he the greatest gathering of its kind ever held in the state. The sessions will be held In the Hall of House of Representatives. Some of the prominent jurists of the country will be on the program. The main speaker for the conven- lion is United States Senator King, of Utah. Two former judges and one presiding judge of North Carolina aro to attend the convention, these being ex-Judge Bynum, of Greens boro. and ex-Judge Guthrie, of Char lette. and Judge Guion, of Newbern. On Saturday H^Tit the lawyers will enloy (heir annual banquet at the loffcrson Hotel,, and an attractive program of speeches for this occa sion has been prepared. Senator King will speak at the banquet,' though his principal address will be delivered tonight. Bethea, of Fork, occurred .Saturday night in McLeod’s Infirmary. ? Flor ence, where he was carried three days previous for treatment. On Wednesday evening Mr. Bethea was returning to his home at a late hour afteU spending the afternoon at Fork. He was driving alone when for some unknown cause, he fell or was thrown from his buggy falling on his head. He was rendered un conscious and remained where he fell until the following morning when he was found and still unconscious. He was removed to Florence and It was seen that his condition was sell ous. It was thought for some time that his neck was broken and little hope was entertained for his recov ery as all the surgical skill that was done for him seemed to be of no avail.
