•MISS PENGUIN REFUSES.
Mr. Johnny Penguin Muoolhed down
his feathers with great care, for lie
was going a-culling. He looked around
Hie beach and then gazed keenly, far
out upon the ocean. He strutted
around a moment or two and then
looked about iiim again.
“What shall I take Iter?” lie askdrt
himself. There were plenty of other
Iienguiiis around whom lie could have
asked for advice but lie didn't want
anyone's advice. 1 He wanted to decide
the question himself. The only thing
was ihat lie didn't quite know how to
answer his own question. That was

present such as no penguin has ever

a very proud and haughty fashion.

As he walked along with Ids head
high in the air he thought of what a
lovely home lie.would have with Miss
Penguin, for he was going a-calling
on the loveliest Miss Penguin on Hie
whole island.
At one time he looked down and
saw a line atone, smooth and quite
perfect. ,
"This will Jusl do for her,” he said,
"for Miss Penguin must he given an
engagement ring if l am to ask her
to-marry me. t*iie will expect it and
she will accept it, hu, hu,” and lie
gave a laugh of joy.
At Iasi lie reached Ihe spot where
Miss Penguin was slanding.
“How fine and straight she stands,”
he said to himself,, and then he
stopped right in front of Miss Penguin.
“I’ve come to see you, Miss Pen
guin,” he said, “and I want you to be
my mate. Here is the engagement
ring:”
He dropped the stone in front of
her. She certainly could not refuse it.
Hut Miss Penguin looked in another
direction and did not pay any atten

“Aiiss Penguin,” he said, “will you

Having already obtained liberal and substantial sub
scriptions to the capital stock of my proposed corporation
I am now offering the balance or any part of it upon the
terms set forth below.
a The Chamber of Commerce, with commendable vigor
and manifesting a splendid faith in the future of our City,
has undertaken, with free eats, splendid music and good
speeches, to organize a corporation with which at the an
nounced expense of FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND
DOLLARS OR MORE to erect a new, splendid and com
modious hotel to meet the present needs of the community
in this respect.
To those to whom this advertisement is addressed it is
not necessary for me to dwell upon the almost prohibitive
expense incident to the erection and equipment of such a
hotel nor the length of time necessary to erect and equip
it. Those who are in reality interested in this matter are
already familiar with these things.
Neither the hotel business nor the needs of Florence
are new to me. I have lived here for many .years, during
practically all of which time I have been in the hotel busi
ness.
I realized the needs of Florence for additional hotel ac
comodations and had consulted an architect and contractor
before anything was said by the Chamber of Commerce
on this subject, with a view to enlarging, partially re
modeling, more efficiently equipping and beautifying the
present Hotel Florenc, so that it might met every need
of the community for many years to come.
In order to save my property, as an investment and to
meet the community’s needs, which I recognize, I am now
determined to go forward with my plans and expend ap
proximately ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS
on my present property in adding one hundred bed rooms,
fireproofing and equipping all rooms with hot and cold
bath, heat and lights, in converting the mezzanine floor into
reception rooms, ladies’ lobby and orchestra balcony and
in generally renovating and rejuvenating the property. To
this end and in order to raise funds with which to carry
out these plans I have decided to incorporate my property,
putting in the present building, equipment and contents at
the sum of ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-FIVE
THOUSAND DOLLARS and selling the capital stock at
the par value of ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS per share
to such an amount as will raise the funds necessary to con
summate my plans.
I will apply for a charter for a corporation with an
authorized capital stock of THREE HUNDRED THOU
SAND DOLLARS, put in my present plant and as an in
ducement to the subscription to the stock I will guarantee
to the purchasers an eight (8%) per cen annual dividend
for a period of five yearsv absolutely, and will sell to any
individual or syndicate as much of the entire capital stock
as he or they may want provided that when the n^anage-
ment of the property passes out of my hands the guarantee
as to dividends shall immediately cease and upon the fur
ther condition that before any of the stock should be sold I
have the refusal of the same.
The returns on the investrnent will not necessarily be
jimited to the eight per cent guaranteed, but will be cumu
lative; that is, if the business earns more than eight per cent
it will be ratably distributed.
Then Florence will have a five hundred thousand dollar
hotel, costing not more than three hundred thousand dol
lars, built, equipped, furnished and operating, not only
meeting the every need of the City, but in addition furnish
ing to those who invest a safe, fair and sure return for the
use of their money.

To those citizens of Florence who recognize the com
munity’? needs of additional hotel accomodations in the*
iuimediate future I am offering this opportunity to assist
Wi through the safe and sane investment of their money in a
proposition which has passed the stage of speculation and
has so demonstrated its stability and earning capacity as to
enable me to guarantee a fair and possibly better return on
the capital employed, as above stated.
Building will be commenced as soon as possible. **
Subscriptions to the capital stock will be received in
amounts from one hundred dollars up at the following
places; Law Office Arrowsmith, Muldrow, Briges and
Hicks, Hotel Florence.
