Columbia, April 13—The Southern
Railway Is making more money than
any of the trunk lines operating In
the Southeast. This is indicated by
ie Southern’s report for the month
of January, just filed with the South
Carolina Railroad Commission. Th^
Railroad commission has reports
for January of all the main ronds
operating in the state, and these re
ports show that the'Southern’s gross
and net nevenues far exceed those ot
any other line.
During January the Southern eain-

Clemson College, April 13.—Care
should be taken In buying tobaccq
fertilizer that materials from which
they are made are derived from the
right sources, says R. E. Currln,
Superintendent of the Pee Dee Ex
periment Station, in Bulletin 43, “To
bacco Culture in South Carolina.” The
phosphorus in tobacco fertilizer is
generally obtained from 14 per cent
or 16 per cent add phosphate, while
the nitrogen is obtained from dried
bipod, fish scrap, tankage, cotton seed
meal, and sulphate of ammonia/ The
use of nitrate of soda under tobacco
except In \<*ry rare cases is not
recommended. Dried ground blood is
almost as quickly available as soda
and should compose at least one half
of the nitrogen in ^tobacco fertilizer.
The other half may* be obtained from
the sources named above, giving cot
tonseed meal the preference.
Potash in the form of sulphate
only should be used. Muriates and
kanit should not be used, as they
contain chlorin, which tends to In
jure the burning qualities of tobac
co. The presence of chlorin is shown
by the black ashes produced in burn-
lug.
Stable manvre may bo used In
small quantities or in compost at the
rate of three Vo five loads per acre.
But too much stable manure tends to
cause fungus diseases on the growing
tobacco. The best way to use sta
ble manure ‘ when used by itself is
to chop it finely and sow In the drill
at the rate of from three to five
leads per acre. Another good method
