STATE.

places in South Carolina, according
to information reaching (lie offices of
(he South Carolina Railroad Commis
sion from Ihe Western Union Tele
graph Company, anommeement of
which is made by the commission.
The commission reports that tele
graph offices have been opened in
many towns which heretofore used
Ihe telegraph offices at tlie railroad
stations.
A new office.. wa s opened at Estill
on .March 15th. In February the West
ern Union company opened a new of
fice i t Walferboro. During April new
offices are being opened at Allendale,
Conway and Lake City. New offices
are soon to be opened at Mullins,
Clinton and AIcColl, as soon as desir
able locations can be secured.

Four Brick Stores In Busi
ness Block Completely

Destroyed.
One of the most prominent business
blocks of Timmonsville was swept
by fire last night which destroyed
four brick buildings and caused a
damage of at least one hundred thons
and dollars.
The following stores were burned:
Solomon Schaffer, o ne story brick
building; Peoples* Bunk, two story
brick building; Electric Eight office,
one story brick building; Sam Ba-
roody. one story brick building. All
of the stores were owned by Dr. T.
H. Houck. Dr. Houck .stated today
that he valued Hie property at fifty
thousand dollars and that he was in
sured for only $15,060. Mr. Schaffer
suffered a great loss, liis stock being
valued at $40,000 with only $10,000
insurance. Saul Baroody had just
ihoved into his store with a stock of
groceries and carried no insurance,
it was stated today that Dr. Houck
would rebuild at once with much larg
er and more expensive structures.
The fire is one of the worst that Tim
monsville has ever suffered. The ori
gin of the fire has not been deter
mined. f
