Experience of Spanish Monarch Very!
Much Like That of Some Amerl.
can Smalt Boya.
King Alfonso has been telling the
story of bis first cigarette.
The incident, it appears, occurred
Immediately after he had been formal
ly enthroned as king of Spain when
attaining his majority on his sixteenth
birthday.
Up to that time^he had not been al
lowed to smoke, nor even then was the
prohibition withdrawn. Nevertheless,
lie came to the conclusion that, as a
ruling monarch, he might at least do
as he liked is this respect.
Accordingly he asked his brolher-lnr
lav, the prince of Asturias, for a
cigarette.

hef own words:
' “I was In a worn-out condition. My
stomach was out of order. I didn’t
sleep well. I was tired all the time.
I couldn't half eat, and didn't rest
well at night.
“I would get out of heart and blu°.

"We heard of Ziron, and from what
I read, I was sure It wouldn’t hurt me, 1
If it didn't help me. But after taking
it, I found It really helped me, and I
sent back for more. I ate better, felt
much stronger. I am sure Zirou la,

11 At last the young king made his way
to tlte sentry at the palace door, who
j amiably produced u plug of black to
bacco from his trousers pocket and
rolled a cigarette for his majesty, who
smoked It proudly through the palace.
“It made me violently sick later on,”
ho said in telling the Story; “hut I
enjoyed it at the time. I felt, as I
puffed and puffed, that 1 was really
und truly grown up at last”
Red Squirrels.
'fhe red squirrels are found most
abundantly in woods of chestnut, hem
lock or oak .trees. These little sqttlr- j
rels do not lay up big stores of food |
as some of the other varieties. In
summer time they make excursions to
the fields and orehards. Apple seeds
are a favorite delicacy.
