BULGARIA FACING
FINANCIAL CRISIS
COUNTER CLAIMS AGAINST GER-
'MANY ONLY THjNG THAT
CAN SAVE COUNTRY
Sofia, Bulgaria, March 19. Bulgaria
is facing a financial crisis, it is as
serted. The war cost the country
over 51,500,000,000 while its estimat
ed wealth is only $2,200,000,000. Tho
national debt before the war was
*160,000,000.
Of the national debt as it now
stands Bulgaria owes to Germany
$660,000,000 which was advanced in
installments, of ten milUons, but la»i
winter Germany discontinued this
practice, and demanded payment for
munitions in cash. Germany, evideni
ly was not in the business of helping
its Allies for nothing, as the prices
charged Bulgaria for gas masks clear
ly indicate. For each mask it charg
ed $16 and a sheepskin, as compared
with the cost of a similar article for
the United States army in England of
$4.50.
Financial experts agre ethat the
solvency of the country can only be
preserved by the presentation of
counter claims against Germany.
Even if Bulgaria’s total indebtedness
to Germany is outweighted by Bu*;a
ria’s counter claims, oppressive taxes
must be imposed for a decade or two
in order to meet the remaining debt
say Bulgarians. The state revenues
before the last three wars averagen
$50,000,000 per annum. Recent taxa
tion added $20,000,000 to this sum.
To fill the gap between what is possi
ble to raise by taxation and the needs
of the nation jt is now proposed to
confiscate wealth illegally obtained
in addition to drastic taxation of war
profits. 1 ' -
Under Germany’s tutelage the ft
nancial policy maintained by Bulga
ria sank the country deeper and deep
er every year in debt. It was the
only belligerent country which issued
no internal loan, but contented itselt
with printing paper money to the to
tal of almost $500,000,000, at the not
mal rate of exchange. As a result
Bulgaria’s currency has depreciated
more than onehalf, while the accumu
lation of private wealth ran parallel
to the rapidly mounting state debt.
More than eighty hanks were float
ed having a total capitalization of
nearly one hundred millions.
Bulgaria’s sole negotiable article of
export is tobacco, and this she must
use in the world’s markets in exchan
ge for food, clothing, cotton, oils, raed
icine, etc. At present there are in
the country the crops of the past two
years, valued at about $300,000,000.

Poison Sprays For
Chewing Insects

—There are three forms of poisons
either of which are used for killing
garden insects which chew the plants
(We do not recommend Paris Green
except on hardy plants like cabbage
and potato.) These - poisons are Ar
senate of Lead, Arsenate of Lime,
and Paris Green, either of which may
be sprayed or dusted.
The Poison Sprays—How to Prepare
In making a poison spray always
stir the poison to be used with a lit
tie water to the thickness of white
wash before adding it to the pail or
barrel of water. '(Bv a barrel of wa-
- we mean 50 gallons.)
Paris green for spraying is made
up at the rate of one level teaspoon
ful to an ordinary pail of water.
SlaKe a lump of quick lime and add
this fresh whitewash to the Paris
Green solution before using. Do not
omit this lime in making Paris Green
£pray. For larger amounts use one
fourth pound of Paris Green to 50
gallons of water and add the white
wash made from slakfpg about a
nound of Quicklime. (A pail holds 2
o 2 1-2 gallons.)
Arsenate of lead or arsenate of
lime sprays are made up by adding
a heaping teaspoorljil of either of
these poisons to an ordinary pail of
vater; or one pound, if in the pow
der form, or two pounds. If in the
naste form, to 50 gallons of water.
These poisons are bought either as
paste or powder. Purchase onry
good brands made by reliable manu
f acturer r and poisons must be guar
anteed that they do not contain over
75 per cent, water soluble arsenic,

Calarrenate.)
There poisons may be dusted t*iru
a muslin or cheese cloth sack or thru
an old tomato can having a number
">f c’uall botes made in the bottom.
The best time to dust is in the morn
’ng when the dew is on but do not
allow the sack to touch the plants
when they are wet with dew. Pois

two pounds to the acre depending on
