There have been times when de
partment stores of this city, as a re
suit of specially advertised sales,
have been forced to close their doors
because no more customers could be
admitted with safety. No such condi
tlon, however, has ever been known
here In the liquor business. Never
theless, a liquor store on North Liber
ty street had to close its doors yester
day afternoon because of the rush of
business and admit, by twos and
threes, eager customers from a crowd
that overflowed from the sidewalk in
to the street. And while, perhaps,
this establishment enjoyed the tng
gest “rush” of the dayf every other
liquor house in the city did a record
business.
And the reason for all this was
that it is expected that President
Wilson will tomorrow 'night sign the
bill which will boost the tax on liquor
by $3.20 a gallon, make Washington

discomforts to the “wets. And so
they came—the butcher, the baker,
the candlestick maker, “ in rags and

was a motley crowd that packed the
