(By Harold Booker) Columbia, Feb. 26—Senator W. S Rodgers, Jr„ of Spartnburg, who la the author of a bill now on the Senate calendar provld'ng for a 64-hour week for cotttrn mill operatives In South Carolina, stated today that be would not prefes- his' bill at this session. Senator Rodgers says that he lias been told by members of South Caro lina Colton Manufacturers Associa tion that their spring meeting an ef fort will be made 1o agree on a sche. dule of 55 hours a week. If this works’ out satisfactorily the Spartan burg sentf.’or hopes that the manufao turers will later be able to work out a schedule of an even shorter number of hours per week. D Senator Dial a Visitor. United States Senator-elect Nat B. Dial, of Laurens, was a Columbiai visitor last night and dropped in on the S»ate Senate which wais’ in seas ion. The privileges of the floor were tendered him on motion of Senator Friday of Orangeburg. Some of the senators wanted the Laurens man to make a speech buc he declined to do so. Mr Dial left Columbia 'today for Washington where he wil take the oath of office on March 4, succeed ing Senator Pollock. Ii is rumored that Senator Pollock la’ to get an ap- peltvnient on the Federal Trade Com mission. Mr. Dial says that the flu is still raging in Laurens. Very Brief Session. The Senate held a \ery brief sess lion last night and took up only local and uncontested mattei*. An execu tive session was held at which a large number of appointments made bv Gov ernor Cooper were confirmed. These appointments, for the most part, were of the county officers endorsed in the primaries last summer. New Chambers of Commerce. A new chamber of commerce wave seems to be sweeping over'the state. Florence is trying to*crganize a live commercial body fo wbrk for the nn building of the city and county and Greenwood is planning the organiza tion of a similar body. The little town of Greer in Greenville county has raised a big rum for a chamber also. Orangeburg is on the lookout for a live secretary for Us organiza tion. Former Legislator on sad Mission. .1. H. Hutchinson, of Anderson, a former member of the House of Re presentatives from Anderson county, ,was in Columbia yesterday on a sad mission. He came to the funeral of his little grandchild, the baby daugli ter of Mr. and Mrs. L. P. Fouche, of this city. Mr. Fouche is deputy col lector of internal levenue. New Secrcatary Coton Association. J. Rutledge McGhee yesterday rs signed as secretary of the South Caro lina Cotton Association and Dr Reed Smith, member of'the faculty of the j University of South Carolina and re cent secretary cf the State Council of Defease, was elected to succeed him. Mrs. H. R. Clinkocales was chosen as sistant seem ary. The people of the state arc well acquainted with the splendid work done by Dr. Smith as secretary of the council of defense. !
