Salaman, a homeless lad of 12
years, was adopted at San Benito by
the Twenty Sixth, then patrolling tho
Mexican border. Adventure awaited
just over the threshold, and he met
the test with a courage that brought
instant distinction.

was driving through a lonely streten
of country twelve miles from San

and surrounded the automobile. In
an instant firing became general and
a rain of bullets clattered against
the ear, which continued, plunging
forward, with Robertson and the lacf
returning the fire. Robertson’s hat
was shot from his head. The boy es

When the regiment proceeded to
France. Salaman went along as mas
cot and was in the trenches for sever
al months.

of Registration, C. G. Brown, at the
Chamber of Commerce, City

of nine o’clock a. m. and five o’clock
p. m. from day to day until fihe time
for closing said books.
The election is to be held to elect
one Councilman, the term of office of
Councilman Wysong, filling out the
unexpired portion of Councilman Cov
ington’s term, expiring May 9th, 1919.
All persons desiring to. register
for raid election are required under
the law to present themselves In per
son, and to produce a certificate of
registration from the County Board
to produce satisfactory evidence of
having been a resident of the city for
four months, preceding the date of
the election, and of having paid all
taxes assessed and due for the year
1918.

(the South Carolina legislature has pe
titioned the members of congress
from that State to do their utmost to
secure the passage of the Byrnes
bill appropriating $10,000,000 to pro
vide homes for returning soldiers,
there is but a scant chance that fav
orable action will be taken on the
measure, as the house committee on
appropriations has turned the matter
down. However, Secretary
made an earnest request of the house
today.to bring a special rule for Its
consideration in order that available
lands may be had at this time for
the soldiers. If the rule is brought
in, it will then be squarely up to the
house to take hold of the matter, but
with an unfavorable report from the
