Approximately two million acres of land in the lower part of this State have been listed for develonment un Her the Byrnes bill, and this makes South Carolina keenly interested in the enactment of the legislation. Governor Cooper is con sidering the nature of his reply and is giving careful consideration to the merits of the bill. The bill provides tor the expend! ture of a hundred million, if so much be necessary, for the "investigation, irrigation, drainage and development of swamp, arid, waste and undevelop ed lands for the purpose of providing employment and farces with improve raents and eoninment for honorably discharged soldiers, sailors and ma rines of the United States.” The bill provides for the disposal of the lands under the secretary of the interior, to insure tne reimbursement of the United States, during a term not to exceed 40 years from date of en trance upon the lands by the settler, iwlth interest at 4 per cent. The bill provides for the develop ment of one or more projects witmn each State. There are soldier settlement bills on the calendars of both houses of the present general assembly.
